"Eric was very accommodating with my schedule. He provided a 2 hour window when scheduling the appointment and contacted me in advance of his arrival with an ETA. He did a brief assessment of what we wanted for the project and got right to it. He was precise in determining the correct location to mount the TV and run the wires. He cut the Sheetrock perfectly, installed faceplates, and organized all the wires. What was once a maze of cords now looks neat and tidy. In testing the TV, he set up the optimal settings that we wanted, made sure everything was to our satisfaction, and cleaned up. No mess, no haggling. Eric is a professional at his craft and very knowledgable. After witnessing his skill with the TV installation, I asked his advice on a bigger project we were considering for our home. Impressed with how thoughtful he assessed our needs (again without any up selling), I just offered him the contract to complete our home theatre renovation, indoor and outdoor wires and wireless Ethernet, speaker wiring in our gym and pool room, camera system, and home office set-up. In talking with Eric, it was clear that he takes pride in his work and comes from a family of engineers and technicians - it's in his blood. If you are looking for an honest, skilled technician willing to work with your budget then I would strongly advise giving Eric a call."

TV Antenna questions, answered by experts

Before your TV antenna stops working, there are a few ways to tell it’s starting to break. Some common signs that your antenna needs repair include:

  • A repetitive “no signal” issue

  • A redundant “searching” issue

  • Increased signal issues during a cloudy or rainy day

  • A sudden drop in signal strength, regardless of the weather

If you’re experiencing these problems, you’ll want to ensure that your cables are still in good shape and have not deteriorated. In addition, check to make sure that your cables are firmly in place at the wall outlet. Finally, check the position of your antenna to ensure there are no obstructions in its path. If you’ve checked your antenna thoroughly and are still having these problems, a repair is most likely needed by an antenna technician.

Yes, in general, raising your TV antenna will improve your reception. Besides raising the location of your antenna, you should try putting it by a window. In fact, you can have the same antenna but get double the channels or more if it's in the best location. The highest spot to put a TV antenna will be on your roof, and the tallest type of outdoor antenna is a tower.

There aren’t any guarantees that the TV antenna you purchase and install will provide perfect reception. Much depends on your distance from broadcasting towers, any nearby obstructions, and typical weather. However, doing some research minimizes the risk of disappointment.

You can speak to neighbors to understand their setup. Various online tools allow you to check how far you are from TV transmitters in your area. The Federal Communications Commission, for example, has a tool enabling you to check local Digital TV channel reception.

Selecting the right type of antenna for your situation and having it properly positioned and installed will also increase the chances of better reception.

If you’re having problems with poor reception, here are some simple tips that may help improve the signal and picture quality.

  • Consider the position of the antenna: Could it be higher, is it secure, or are nearby obstructions interfering with the signal? For a directional antenna, you may need to reposition it in the direction of the broadcast tower.

  • Move any metallic objects: Metal can interfere or block reception, so if you have stainless steel objects or the antenna is near a wrought-iron fence, this could be a problem. Try to keep the antenna at least six feet away from metal objects..

  • Cable length: An overly long cable can reduce signal strength. If you don’t need as much cable as you are using, it may be better to exchange it for a shorter one.

Coax cable connects to your television, modem, or cable box. Look for a female coax connection on these devices. Your coax cable will connect to any of these. The other end of the wire runs to the service connection coming into the house.
