"Fantastic, Bill and his crew did an excellent job on my deck, sunroom and most recently boardwalk down to the lake. They stayed on the project everyday until it was finished and polished off every little detail. Everyone was always friendly, accommodating and very pleasant. I would hire them again without hesitation!!"

"Great job repairing an external basement door from years of water damage. Eric did a fantastic job and completed it in one day. I highly recommend Cransten Handyman."

"We reached out to Joe at Aspect Construction for a quote for a stamped patio as well as a driveway extension. The is very nice and very respectful to our property. We feel they do very high quality work such as pinning our new stamped patio to the house foundation, lay down stone and wire mesh before pouring the cement. Other companies we got quotes from want to go the cheapest way and charge more for their services. We would highly recommend Aspect Construction for any landscaping or construction needs."

"Mr. Edwin did an awesome job relocating our washer and dryer, and replacing couple of broken water pipes in our basement. They are very professional, neat, and finished the job within the two days as per schedule. We would definitely work with them again. Thank you KFS Investment for providing a great service!"

"I’ve had many contractors perform work at my home over the years and David is by far the best. His attention to detail, cleanliness, professionalism, and most importantly fees are unmatched. I can’t say enough about David’s execution on every facet of the project. Not to mention that when he arrived at 8:00 am I doubled his project by adding an entire new room. He said no problem and stayed until that night to complete the project. Both rooms were phenomenal, just amazing work, I couldn’t have been more pleased. HIRE THIS GUY!!"

"The work they did was very good. However, they definitely need to work on communication and keeping the customer informed of what's going on, that part I was not too satisfied with. When they scheduled the work with me after we hired them, they told me what day they'd be coming out and asked if I'd be home. I said yes, I will. I made sure to be home that day, but they never showed up, costing me time off work, and never called me to let me know they weren't coming. At least keep me in the loop. The project rep's response to my complaint was, "You didn't need to be home anyway." Well, would've been nice to be told that upfront. There was also no follow-up when they finished - no phone call or email to ask if we had any questions or concerns, as this was a pretty major project done to our house. To me, that's important professionalism. As a customer, you want to feel valued. All we received was an email with the final invoice."

"Overall the job went well with this company. The service was pretty quick after we checked out the offer. With the 300 dollars discount we still paid them 1400 dollars. They were good for us. They came, they were punctual. They cleaned as best as they could after work. I was satisfied. I don't know how to do it and I have no clue if the price was fair or not."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

To determine if your basement walls are suitable for finishing, assess their structural integrity and moisture conditions. Look for any signs of damage, such as cracks, bowing, or excessive moisture. Ensure proper drainage and address any underlying issues before proceeding.

Consult with a professional if you're uncertain about the structural stability or potential risks associated with finishing your basement walls.

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

It is generally more affordable to finish a basement than an attic, though it ultimately depends on how you plan to use the space. The average cost to finish a basement ranges from $7 to $23 per square foot, while attic renovation costs $30 to $60 per square foot. However, a simple attic conversion to a storage space will cost significantly less.

The average cost of remodeling a basement is $30 to $75 per square foot. If your space is unfinished and looks like it may need more help, use the higher number when calculating your estimated basement remodeling costs. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional 20% to the top of your estimate to cover any “what if” situations.

Whether it’s more affordable to gut a house than build a new one depends on the markets where you'd be buying and selling. However, it’s usually less expensive to renovate a home than to build new construction.

Most homeowners pay between $100,000 and $200,000 for demolition and remodeling costs, whereas the average cost to build a new home is between $139,000 and $531,300.
