"I have used Eads Electric now for 5 jobs and am planning on using them again for my master bathroom remodel again next year. They worked with us on our basement remodel post Helene and were upfront about the cost and even found us ways to shave down the costs. They did our generator outlet, our kitchen remodel, the bathroom exhaust/light, a ceiling fan in the spare bedroom and several light switches and outlets in the bedroom. Their prices were very reasonable and both men were respectful of our home. They even came after work so we didn't have to take the day off of work. Best of all they showed up when they said they would, keep cost within quoted prices and didn't mind when our three cats wanted to help with the work."

"Quite honestly, this was not the lowest cost proposal I received for this project. If it wasn't for Ron I would have awarded the work to someone else. But Ron convinced me that there was a price for quality, and that I could trust them to deliver. I made the RIGHT decision. The installation is beautiful. Better than the original roof. When they arrived, they worked non-stop. When the project was complete, they cleaned up better than it was when they arrived. There was never a question on what was included in the price, and the workmanship is exquisite. big 5 stars."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

As a safety measure, you should always turn off the main breaker while operating your generator’s backup breaker. In addition, you should also switch off all appliance breakers so you don't have a power surge when the main breaker turns back on. And finally, turning off the main breaker prevents back-feeding, which endangers utility workers with the risk of electrocution. Back-feeding could also destroy the electrical circuits of your neighbors if they use the same power network.

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.

You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.

In most cases, there are no tax credits available for home generators. However, that’s a general statement that applies to federal tax credits, so you might have access to state or local tax incentives. You can check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) for more information about your area. If you hire a reliable home generator installer, they should also know if there are any state or local perks you can use to reduce your installation costs, including tax breaks and rebates.
