Generally, you should paint your bathroom every three to four years. Seven years is usually the maximum time you should allow between refreshes. Technically, mineral spirits are a type of paint thinner, so they can be used for the same purposes. In most cases, pure mineral spirits are preferable to other paint thinners. Still, if necessary, you can successfully use paint thinners for most of the same applications, such as thinning or cleaning oil paints.

Beginners can absolutely use a paint sprayer, but there is some technique involved, so you’ll have to spend some time learning how to use your sprayer. It’s a good idea to practice on a scrap surface before moving to your actual painting project to get used to using the sprayer. This can help avoid over spraying, which can lead to drips, bubbles, and other imperfections on your finished product.

Since you’ll be going back over an oil-based paint (stain or varnish), you need the proper material for good adhesion. Using an oil primer is critical to ensuring that the longevity of your work stands the test of time. You can apply any type of paint (oil or latex paint) on top of an oil primer after it has cured.

This may come down to personal preference, but it’s generally best to paint the ceiling before you paint the walls. Why? Painting the ceiling can be more physically demanding, and painting the ceiling last may result in drips or splatters that would mess up freshly painted walls. By painting the ceiling first, you’ll avoid having to touch up walls after any painting accidents. It may not matter, though, if you’re painting the ceiling the same color as the walls.
