"These guys are incredible. They refaced our kitchen cabinets in North Carolina. We were so pleased that we asked them to build, install, and face the kitchen cabinets in our new house in Virginia. They are meticulous in every aspect of their work - from keeping a clean workspace to making sure every little detail of their work is perfect. This work required them to come to the worksite in Virginia, get all the measurements they needed, fabricating the cabinet boxes, having all the drawer boxes, drawer fronts, and cabinet doors fabricated in solid wood, then bringing all that material up to Virginia and spending 3 days installing and facing the cabinets. My wife and I are thrilled at the end result and continue to be impressed by the individuals who actually do the installation. I whole-heartedly recommend AMR."

Customers say: Quality work

"We have worked with Tommy on 2 projects over the course of the past year or so and we couldn't be happier. We first hired Tommy for custom built-in cabinets/bookshelves on either side of our fireplace. They were extremely well made and look as if they've always been there. We recently were undergoing a kitchen remodel and contacted Tommy to help with making all new cabinet doors, drawers, and panels. Tommy did an amazing job as our cabinet boxes have "settled" a bit and we're not exactly even. He added molding to the tops of the cabinets and also made our kitchen island a beautiful focal point by adding raised panels and baseboards. In both projects, we communicated exactly what we were looking for and Tommy executed at a very high level. He also had several suggestions that we proceeded with. After meeting with him to discuss your project, I'm confident that you'll be very happy that you did."

"I was very pleased with the outcome of the bookshelf, storage project that spans 15 feet end to end by 9 feet tall to accommodate my books, music collection, and decorative items with ample storage below. The team of four worked diligently with the install and maintained a clean work area, both inside and outside my home. I would definitely use them again for future home improvement projects and recommend their services to friends and family. Linda W."

Cabinet Contractors questions, answered by experts

Kitchen base cabinets are the cabinets that sit on the floor in your kitchen—and yes, you can stack base cabinets. Usually, homeowners stack kitchen base cabinets when building a pantry. Base cabinets come in various styles, with doors, drawers, and glass fronts—so your options for creating stacked base cabinets are endless.

Whether you install flooring before or after kitchen cabinets depends primarily on the type of flooring you are using. For materials like hardwood, tile, and sheet flooring, the best practice is to install the flooring first. This ensures the cabinets are installed at the correct height and on a stable surface. However, you should not install cabinets on top of floating floors, such as laminate or luxury vinyl plank (LVP). These types of flooring need room to expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes. Placing heavy cabinets on top can restrict this movement, potentially causing the floor to buckle and making the cabinets unstable. For floating floors, install the cabinets first and then lay the flooring up to them. Other reasons to consider installing cabinets before the flooring include saving money on materials (since you won't need flooring under the cabinets) and avoiding potential damage to your new floor during cabinet installation. Additionally, installing cabinets directly on the subfloor might prevent voiding your flooring's warranty.

Options include stock, semi-custom, and custom cabinets, each offering varying levels of personalization and cost.

Before making any big plans, climb up a step ladder and closely examine the top of your cabinets. You’ll get to see what sort of clean-up work needs to be done, but you can also check for any unexpected obstacles. Sometimes this space holds electrical boxes, wiring, or even plumbing components. Those will affect plans to install a new layer of cabinets or shelves.

The term cupboards began in the Middle Ages to describe pieces of furniture that had open shelves and were used to display cups and plates. Today, they’re used less for display and more for concealed storage of a wide variety of items, from special occasion dishware to bedding or other linens.
