"Mr. Gutierrez was pleasant, professional, and knowledgeable. He arrived when scheduled, and emailed me to tell me he was on his way. His work was impeccable, and he and his crew cleaned up after themselves. I will certainly hire him again if the need arises."

"This deck is a walkout from our laundry room into the carport. I drew a plan, and they built it exactly like I wanted with wider steps and special handrail for aging and easy access. They finished it with bead board and chair rail. It has storage under it. We have enjoyed using it."

"Ryan and his team of professionals did an excellent job . They were very thorough and very concerned that the problems were solved at the root cause and followed it all the way through like experts. They explain everything along the way, so that the customer understands why a project has a problem and how it can be fixed. I have enjoyed working with them."

Small jobs welcome

"Great experience from beginning to end on new deck replacement install. The quote provided was professional and very thorough. They called prior to installation with updates and their arrival plans. We asked for some changes, and again professional change orders were made, keeping all questions and unknowns out of the project. The installers were great, efficient and friendly. Did assume anything and ask questions for our opinions. The were missing some small covers for the composite boards at the screws. Obtained them and came back to install them within two days! Again, can't say enough great things about our experience! They used the original white railing we installed years ago, and made it sturdier than it was before.... Wonderful work."

"Blake did an outstanding job on my wood laminate floor repairs. He arrived right on time & not only repaired my damaged living room floor, but also installed wood laminate flooring in my laundry room. Also very happy with the price he charged. Very reasonable."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Yes, you can draw your own deck plans in many cases. However, you must know your local building codes and be familiar with carpentry principles. Even then, it's always best to run your plans by a professional contractor with experience building decks, whether you choose to DIY some of the build or not.

Yes, it is generally safe to have a fire pit on a deck, but you must adhere to building codes and take several safety precautions. For both built-in and freestanding models, you must use a heat-resistant barrier, such as a fire pit pad or heat shield, between the pit and the deck. Additionally, consider the weight of the fire pit and ensure your deck can structurally support it, reinforcing it if necessary. The fire pit must also be positioned a safe distance from your house, particularly from materials like vinyl siding, to prevent heat damage.

The best material for your deck depends on several factors, including your budget, location, aesthetic preferences, and the level of maintenance you’re willing to do. Wood decking, like redwood, ipe, cedar, and pine, lasts the longest, but it’s more expensive and requires more upkeep than composite and synthetic decking.

Deck stairs should have at least three stringers rather than two. The recommended minimum width for stairs is 36 inches, and the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors recommends at least three cut stringers to provide sufficient support on wood decking stairs of this width. Generally, stringers should be a maximum of 16 inches apart for wood decking and 12 inches apart for more flexible composite decking.
