"Both times they were prompt, courteous and helpful. After servicing when my toilet was gurgling, I had a long conversation with Erin at the office and she was very informative and helpful in trying to decide if it was a plumbing issue or a septic tank issue. She recommended some plumbers and one came that afternoon and addressed the issue. I was so thankful that she spent time on the phone with me, helping to problem solve this issue."

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

Perc rates vary dramatically, and a good perc rate could be anything from 5 minutes per inch of drainage to 60 minutes per inch. The lower the number, the faster your system will drain and the more effective it will be. A 60-minute-per-inch drain rate is the highest number considered to be good, or even allowable, draining.

The best times of year to pump or empty a septic tank are spring and fall. Many professionals recommend spring because the ground has thawed, making the tank easier to access, and any snowmelt or rainfall can aid in proper drainage. Pumping before summer is also ideal to avoid conflicts with vacations or outdoor gatherings.

Fall is another great option, as contractors may be less busy than in the spring. Servicing the tank in late fall or early spring can also reduce the risk of overflow from extra precipitation during winter and spring.

While summer is a possibility, winter is generally not recommended. The ground is often frozen, which can make it difficult to access the tank, and the waste inside may also be frozen.

Because well water is not artificially filtered or pre-treated, it may contain contaminants. As a result, it’s possible for well water to damage pipes based on what is in the water. Well water can be corrosive, slowly rusting and dissolving pipes, fixtures, and fittings. The corrosion can affect the taste and quality of the drinking water that comes out of the taps in your home.

Beyond the type of well pump, there are a few other factors to consider when selecting a well pump. Keep in mind the depth of your well, your average water usage, and the PSI of your water-consuming appliances to determine the appropriate motor horsepower and size of your well pump.

There are a couple of ways you can determine the depth of your well. One method is to use a device called a well sounder. This tool has a long measuring tape containing a sensor to alert you once the end reaches the water.

Or you can DIY it by using a long tape measure with a half-filled bottle of water attached to it. Lower the tape measure into your well. Once you feel tension on the tape, you’ll know the bottle has reached your static water level. This will give you an approximate idea of your well’s depth.
