"We had Precise Repair and Remodel build an apartment in our basement. It is totally self contained and includes a kitchen, bathroom, laundry area, dining area, living room and bedroom. The work that Scott has done is nothing short of amazing. He has turned part of our basement area into a gorgeous and roomy apartment. His work is skillfully done and just gorgeous. He does what he says he will do and he is truly great at turning nothing into something fabulous. He is trustworthy and has absolutely done what we contracted him to do. If you have any sort of home remodel this is the company to hire. I am truly a fussy person when it comes to remodeling projects and I am so pleased at the work Scott and his company has done for us. I highly recommend Precise Remodel and Repair and you will not be disappointed when you chose them to do what you need to have done. His work and professionalism are fabulous!"

"Jesse helped us come up with the right configuration for our new deck. The deck is off the 2nd floor over a steep downhill slope. It is super sturdy and well built. Meticulous workmanship. We were very pleased with skill of workmen, their professionalism and the final product. And we are thrilled with our new deck!"

"Gary was great! When pulling up old tile we discovered the floor itself was rotten so he had to replace the whole thing. The vanity had to go too so he picked that up and installed it for me as well. Great communication, very professional job done and it looks great! I’ll definitely hire them again for the next project- maybe a deck!"

"I hired this contractor to do a complete, full-house interior remodel based on several excellent reviews from prior customers, and he and his team exceeded all of our expectations. In addition to being highly skilled, he was professional, dependable, reasonable on costs, patient, and a pleasure to work with. Best of all, he and his team did excellent quality work. He also made a number of useful recommendations to enhance the overall look of our finished project. We consider ourselves lucky to have found HTR Interiors and would hire this contractor again without any hesitation. A real find in the interior remodeling field."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Any bowing in a basement wall indicates a problem that needs to be addressed by a professional. If your basement wall bows more than 1 inch, it's time for an inspection. Generally, a wall can bow up to 30% of its thickness (around 2.5 inches for an 8-inch-thick wall) before it becomes an urgent situation. Bowing of 2 to 4 inches is more straightforward to fix than bowing of more than 4 inches, which will require significant repairs. If the bowing is more than 6 inches, the wall will likely need to be replaced. The sooner you address the problem, the easier and less expensive the repair will be.

Yes, in most cases, finishing a basement is worth the cost. The project adds valuable, usable square footage to your home and typically provides a return on investment (ROI) of 70% to 75%. For example, an average basement refinishing project costing $32,000 could add between $22,400 and $24,000 to your property's value. The final value added depends on factors like your location, the quality of materials and workmanship, and the features you include, such as a living space, bedroom, or bathroom. To be officially counted in your home's total square footage, the finished space must comply with all local building codes, including requirements for points of egress. However, in areas prone to flooding, a finished basement might be seen as a liability by potential buyers and could potentially decrease your home's value.

A finished basement does not always count as square footage, as this varies by state regulations. In areas that allow below-grade spaces to be included in a home's official square footage, the basement must typically meet certain conditions. These conditions often include having a functional egress and being a livable space with flooring, finished walls, and temperature control. To be certain, contact your local assessor to confirm your area's specific policies regarding basement square footage.

Walkout basements are not generally included in a home’s square footage, although they may be if they meet certain conditions that depend on local regulations. A finished walkout basement used as a living space may be counted toward square footage in some locations as long as all codes for livable space are met.

Yes, it is possible to turn a regular basement into a walkout basement. Doing so involves excavating the land around at least one side of your basement foundation, installing retaining walls to create a permanent below-grade area outside your home, and then cutting into the foundation to install an exterior door that leads out to the new space. This is an expensive and time-consuming project, but it can add a lot of value and utility to your home.
