"Outstanding driveway engineering on tough mountain terrain We hired Gibson's Grading and Construction to a new gravel driveway on our property in Mars Hill, and the results exceeded our expectations. Our site is steep, and with the heavy seasonal rainfall and real flood-management challenges — this wasn't a simple job. What stood out was their genuine expertise in grading and drainage. They clearly understood how water moves through mountain terrain and designed the driveway with proper crown, cross-slope, and drainage features to handle runoff instead of fighting it. Rather than a generic gravel spread, this was thoughtfully engineered for our specific conditions. The crew was professional, communicative, and clearly experienced with the unique demands of building in the mountains. The finished driveway is solid, well-draining, and already holding up beautifully through heavy rain."

"Working with Brent and Keith on our A-frame build was a great experience overall. From start to finish, they were professional, knowledgeable, and clearly take a lot of pride in their work. The craftsmanship really shows—our home is not only beautiful, but also feels incredibly solid and built to last. The quality of materials and attention to detail exceeded our expectations. The only downside was that the project took a couple of months longer than originally predicted. That said, it was absolutely worth the wait. The end result speaks for itself, and we’d much rather have things done right than rushed. We’re extremely happy with our A-frame and grateful to Brent and Keith for bringing it to life."

Customers say: Super punctual

"Anytime we had more than 3 inches of heavy rain, it washed the gravel away in multiple places and left deep ruts in our approx. 90 feet long relatively steep driveway. Zack Raymond (owner of ZR Landscaping & Grading) and his crew graded and resurfaced the entire drive on August 22-23. I decided to wait with a review until after another heavy downpour. As a result of hurricane Michael, we measured a total of 4.1/4" of precipitation and the driveway is still in perfect condition. Bottom line: "This company clearly did a great job, with which I am totally satisfied!""

"We had a great experience with Kevin and would highly recommend him and use him again! We have a very steep .3 mile driveway and he graded it, installed several new culverts for better water drainage, brought in lots of new gravel and filled in some deep holes in the driveway. It looks great and is functioning very well!"

"I hired Capps Excavation to cut in a new driveway and he did an amazing job. Took down a few big trees that were in the way and that didn't phase them at all. It was on a pretty step slope and they handled it like it was nothing. I wouldn't think twice about hiring them again or recommending them to someone for any excavation, landscaping or tree work!"

Land Clearing Services questions, answered by experts

Pros will assess your soil type, property geography, and rain patterns for optimal slope.

It is almost always necessary to hire a land surveyor near you to ensure your fence sits on the right side of the property line. Mistaking the shape of your property can lead to fines and costly changes if you have to move or adjust the privacy fence—not to mention some surly looks from your neighbor. We recommend jumpstarting your fence planning in the spring to ensure there is plenty of time to map out your plan before construction season.

To hire a land surveyor, you need to start by searching online for reputable professionals in your area. Here are a few steps to take when making a shortlist:

  • Browse land surveyor service website

  • Check credentials

  • Read customer reviews

  • Find their contact information

  • Call or email to inquire about more information

  • Ask how far they travel, if you’re some distance away

  • Find out how they charge for their services

  • Ask about schedule and turnaround times

  • Repeat these steps for one to two other services and compare pricing

There are a couple of ways you can determine the depth of your well. One method is to use a device called a well sounder. This tool has a long measuring tape containing a sensor to alert you once the end reaches the water.

Or you can DIY it by using a long tape measure with a half-filled bottle of water attached to it. Lower the tape measure into your well. Once you feel tension on the tape, you’ll know the bottle has reached your static water level. This will give you an approximate idea of your well’s depth.

The small lines on the tape measure either indicate inches, fractions of an inch, or centimeters and millimeters. On the imperial unit side (aka the inches side), the longest lines indicate inches, followed by the next shortest lines that indicate a half-inch, and then the quarter, eighth, and sixteenth-inch. On the metric side, the lines break down meters, centimeters, and millimeters.
