I started my Home Inspection business here in the Triangle area in 1994. My original experience was as a licensed general contractor with experience in the design, construction and renovation of homes in Durham, Chapel Hill, and Atlanta, Ga, but have been a full time Home Inspector here in North Carolina since 1997. My goal is to serve my clients by providing a thorough and detailed inspection that can give you a realistic picture of the home you are buying or selling. The inspection also includes free phone or e-mail consultation as long as you are living in the home. The report I use has been developed over the last 27 years of experience, and exceeds the requirements of the N.C. and ASHI Home Inspector Standards of Practice. It is a semi narrative with photos included in the summary. I try to write the reports so that realtors and repair contractors who may not have been at the inspection can understand what needs to be done, and why I consider it to be important. One of my long time goals has been to help improve the quality and professionalism of this industry. I have trained several other Home Inspectors and am currently an approved field trainer by the NC Home Inspector Licensure Board. I am past President of the N.C. Licensed Home Inspector Association, the state's largest association of Home Inspectors, and have served two terms totaling 8 years on the N.C. Home Inspector Licensure Board. During this time I chaired the Standards and Rules committee for three years, the Complaint Investigations and Education committees and served two terms as Board chairman. This has given me the opportunity to see the big picture of this industry and offer ideas on how we Inspectors can improve our services to the general public. Additional email - [email protected].

"Fred was wonderful to work with. He was very upfront about the process, charges, and everything was online, which was great given the current covid-19 pandemic. He was extremely thorough - he took 3 hours to carefully go through the entirety of the 2700 square foot townhome we are purchasing. He then spent an additional 20 minutes explaining each item to us in detail, which was great for a novice home buyer, like myself. He included photos of each item in the report, which was helpful to show the home owners and to serve as reminders. He was a pleasure to work with, and I'd absolutely hire him again!"

"The folks at The Aluminum Company never fail to please! They replaced our exterior with vinyl siding about 8 or 9 years ago along with rebuilding both of our porches. We also hired them to replace our gutters and roof in 2017. The wood doesn’t hold up like it used to. Dallas suggested we replace our porches with Trex and vinyl posts. We are very pleased with the results! Beautiful work!!"

Raleigh Waterproofing Inc. was established in May 2001 by David Hawkins II to provided quality service, expert support and knowledge to everyone. There is nothing more important than the customer’s complete satisfaction! We excel in both residential and commercial waterproofing and repairs. We have built our reputation on honest advice, quality service and continued customer support. Our motto has always been, “You haven’t seen expensive until you hire an amateur."

"The work was fantastic! Raleigh Waterproofing did an outstanding job. The crew was prompt and worked very quickly. I was very impressed by the clean-up afterwards too--not only did they clean the yard, but they spread grass-seed and hay on all of the parts that were (unavoidably) affected by the work. Better still, when a torrential downpour exposed the pipe and revealed a flaw in the initial drainage system, Raleigh Waterproofing came out immediately to clean up the washout. They then improved the existing drainage further, at no extra cost. I am very happy with Raleigh Waterproofing, and will recommend them without hesitation to anyone I know who needs drainage work done."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Renovating or remodeling an existing structure is usually less expensive than the cost to build a new house. That’s because you can save on the costs of new building materials, laying a foundation, framing the entire building, and installing new materials and utilities throughout the house. However, if a home is in very poor condition or is incredibly old, you could spend more on upgrades and restoration compared to building from scratch.

Green homes are often more expensive to build, averaging around $200 per square foot compared to the $150 per square foot you’d spend to build a standard home. However, green homes can save you money on your utility bills by consuming less energy or creating energy using solar panels or wind turbines on-site. They’re more expensive to build, but they often end up costing less in the long run.

It is almost always more affordable to buy an existing home than to build one from scratch. First of all, new construction mortgage interest rates are often higher than traditional loans. Also, when building a home, you're covering the cost of brand-new finishes, appliances, electrics, plumbing, utility hookups, and labor. Between the cost of labor and permits, building a home will often cost more in the long run.

Building a house is generally more expensive upfront than moving an existing one. However, the total cost depends on factors such as location, size, materials, labor, and permits. Moving a house can incur significant expenses for transportation, permits, site preparation, and renovations. On the other hand, building a new house allows for customization and may have lower long-term maintenance costs.

No, tiny houses don’t have to have wheels. However, if you plan on traveling with your tiny house and want to use it as a transportation method, it’s a good idea to buy a tiny house with wheels or put wheels on one. If you plan to stay put and live full-time in your tiny house, wheels aren’t necessary.
