"Hired Annas Landscaping to replace the builder's landscaping on our "new construction" home. Work included: 1. building a new raised patio with a paver surface, 2. installing a stone retaining wall at the front of the house, 3. sodding the entire yard, 4. removing trees and cleaning up the wooded area, 5. installing a paver walkway from the driveway to the front door, and 6. providing and planting miscellaneous perennials, shrubs and trees. Work was completed late March 2016, and we paid for each phase of the work as it was completed. All work has a 1-year warranty. Cannot rate Annas Landscaping higher than 3 stars because: 1. Although the front walkway looks beautiful, the patio pavers are uneven and we have been waiting 5 months for Kevin to fix the low spot in our new patio so that the rain no longer puddles there he's waiting on a "free day". 2. The yard was not tilled before the sod was laid, so the ground is severely compacted and as hard as concrete. Consequently, much of the sod on the hill in the backyard has died. Front and side yards did not have all the heavy equipment on them, so the sod looks good in those areas. 3. Being new to NC, we asked for a site plan and plant recommendations. The site plan was a crayon drawing done by Kevin's wife. Suffice it to say she's no artist and we had a good chuckle, but they did offer some useful insight on plant selection, but not plant placement. If I said "put it here", that's what they did. Crape Myrtle, for one, is not doing well, it should have been planted at grade, but it is at least 6-8" above grade. Consequently, it has shown no signs of growth and did not bloom. 4. We felt his crew was unreliable. We never knew when they would show up, or how long they would stay. They all took personal calls on their cell phones, some much more than others. We feel that Kevin needs to be more "hands on". 5. We did not get the opportunity to pick the color of concrete blocks used to elevate the patio, the color of the pavers, and the type of stone used for the retaining wall (or the shape of the retaining wall, for that matter). 6. Annas Landscaping is located less than 2 miles from our house, yet, since collecting his final check, Mr. Annas has not been back to the house to see if we are pleased with his work, let alone to inspect our complaints."

Lawn Irrigation questions, answered by experts

The first step in re-doing a bad lawn is correctly diagnosing the problem. That’s why we recommend calling a licensed and trustworthy lawn care company that can help turn your damaged lawn around. Once the problem is diagnosed and fixed, you’ll want to keep up with lawn maintenance by watering, mowing, and feeding your lawn the proper nutrients.

The best way to fix a lumpy yard depends on the cause. However, in many cases, you can address yard lumps by improving the health of your soil and turfgrass. Choose grass varieties that are best suited for your area and look for disease-resistant varieties. Fertilize and water your lawn as needed to keep it looking lush throughout the warmer months. Mow your grass at a height of 2 to 3 inches once or twice a week.

Overseeding typically involves spreading grass seed either manually or with a machine that sprays the grass seed out and onto the soil. With overseeding, the grass seeds sit on the soil, and some may fall deeper into the soil if you aerated beforehand. With power seeding, a machine cuts narrow rows into the soil and pushes the grass seeds directly into the soil.

Yes, many providers include aeration and soil testing in the seeding process. Confirm with your contractor.

Many homeowners in warmer climates like this resilient, hearty grass because it can tolerate excessive heat and drought while developing into a lush lawn. Unlike other grasses, Bermuda grass grows and spreads quickly and can withstand excessive foot traffic. But whether Bermuda grass is good for lawns may depend on your geographic location, as this grass has a low tolerance for cooler temperatures, which causes it to go dormant and turn brown in the winter months.
