Small jobs welcome

"Grind and Gone Tree Service did a great job! They gave us advice on whether to remove one of our questionable trees, left one of the stumps tall enough to make an outside table, cut some of the wood for our fire pit and even cut me a nice slice of wood to use for my painting hobby. We haven't lived in NC very long so we had no idea who to call but by using the Angi service, they provided us with a professional, friendly, reasonably priced service that I will recommend to everyone I know!! Thanks Randy and Tim! It was a pleasure meeting you guys!"

"We were happy with the way they handled our situation professionally as they ended up coming back on the same day. They worked hard even in the rain and cleaned up when completed. Reasonably priced and would definitely hire again."

"The Justin Dugan Tree Service Crew went out of their way to do a great job. They cut down 6 trees, ground the stumps and cleaned up behind themselves in less than 5 hours. The price was good. I would recommend Justin Dugan Tree Service and would definitely hire them again."

"Everything about the service was great but I could not give perfect score because I expected the yard would be cleaned when they finished. I was not told and did not know that the holes would be left open and all the sawdust and dirt piled all around. I am disabled and elderly. I am still trying to find help to fill the holes and clean up the mounds of sawdust. And that will cost more! Mr Huskens was very kind, and communicated with me throughout the process, and even made a trip back to me to give the receipt for my payment."

"They did a great job! My roof looks great! Reliable and kept me well informed about everything. They kept cost in mind and cleaned up nicely after themselves. Serge even came out late to tarp the roof until it could get repaired so that I didnâ t have any further damage to the house waiting for the roof. They were very nice to work with. Great people. I canâ t say enough good things about them!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

It is possible to cut down a tree on your property yourself, but it is generally not recommended unless specific conditions are met. You should only consider this project if the tree is small (e.g., under 4-5 inches in diameter and short enough that you don't need a ladder to reach the branches), and you are experienced in handling a chainsaw. The tree must also be located far from any power lines, fences, homes, or other structures. Even for small trees, the work can be dangerous, and it's always advisable to have a spotter to ensure the tree falls correctly and no branches fall on you.

For any tree that is large, requires a ladder to access, or is near electrical lines or structures, you should always hire a professional. Attempting to remove a large tree yourself is extremely dangerous, poses a risk of serious injury, and could result in significant damage to your property.

Before any tree removal, it's also important to check your local and state regulations to ensure the tree is not historic or otherwise protected by your city.

If you’re planning on keeping the tree, unless the roots are invasive, there’s no need to remove them, as doing so can cause damage to the tree. If the tree has been cut down and the stump and roots are left, grinding and removing the stump can cause root decay for some species. For other species, the stump and roots will need to be removed to prevent pests, disease, and possible tree regrowth.

On grafted trees, tree suckers will grow from the root stock, not the branches grafted onto it. Therefore, the leaves and characteristics of the suckers aren’t the same as the tree because they are different varieties. Root stock has more hardiness, strength, or drought tolerance than its grafted limbs, so if the suckers are from fruit or flowers, it might be different than the main part of your tree.

Getting a tree pro with the right experience can be the difference between your transplanted tree surviving or not. When hiring a local tree transplanting and removal service, follow up on references, check their portfolio, ask for a breakdown of the costs, and get proof of liability and workers’ compensation insurance.

Also, look for companies certified by the International Society of Arboriculture or registered with the Tree Care Industry Association and make sure they have an appropriate state or city license.

Trees aren't big fans of moving, and they do go into shock during a transplant. Although most carefully thought-out tree transplants see the tree recover from the shock just fine, there is always a risk of having an unsuccessful move. Proper preparation, timing, and diligent aftercare are crucial to minimize the risks when transplanting a tree.
