Earwigs may look scary with their pincers, but they don’t pose a serious threat to humans or pets. They are not poisonous, do not sting, and rarely bite or pinch unless handled. While they are not known to transmit diseases, their presence can signal underlying moisture problems in your home, such as mold, water damage, or rotting wood. A large infestation can become a nuisance, and certain species may emit an unpleasant odor. Therefore, while earwigs themselves aren’t dangerous, a large number of them may indicate bigger issues that should be addressed by a pest control professional.

Strong scents like peppermint, rosemary, lavender, citronella, and others can repel woodpeckers—as pungent smells can overpower their senses. For that reason, you might consider making a homemade spray with one or a combination of these scents to spritz around areas of your home where woodpeckers frequent.

You should not squish a roach because it can spread disease, attract more roaches, and release allergens. Roaches feed on the bodies of dead roaches, making more of them come. Squashing an individual roach only kills that one, whereas boric acid powder or baking soda can kill an entire population because it travels back to the nest before dying.

Although raccoons aren’t particularly picky regarding food, certain sounds, metals, and smells bother them. You can place these items around your home to keep raccoons away:

• Place wire mesh screens around and underneath decks and porches to prevent raccoons from nesting. 

• Put metal sheeting around the edges of your roof or at the base of trees to deter raccoons from coming close. 

• Place a loud battery-operated radio near the raccoon’s den to keep them from nesting.

• Keep a bowl of cider vinegar on your deck or porch.

• Remove old raccoon scents by thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting underneath porches and decks.
