"They might be priced like any tree-cutting business, but P.J.'s Tree Services are worth every penny and more! P.J.'s crew expertly removed our sickly, approximately 80-100 ft tall, 50+ year-old Ponderosa pine growing very close to the house and a mostly dead birch next to a green hedge. On the scheduled day, P.J.'s Tree Services' truck got a flat tire. Despite this, they still showed up and, while having it fixed, did an amazing job! P.J.'s team is friendly, highly skilled, hard-working, and extra mindful of their surroundings. When the trees were gone, all the bushes and our house stood tall, and everything looked back to normal as if nothing happened. The crew not only raked both yards and the driveway, but the owner of P.J.'s Tree Services came for a final inspection and, on his own initiative, even cleaned the gutters! If you need to have your trees removed, P.J.'s Tree Services are way to go!"

"Dustin got back to me right away to schedule. He arrived on time and trimmed my birch snag to a point that it will not fall on my fence when it does fall. He also looked at my mountain ash which was stressed. He trimmed the branches that were rubbing on each other and old me to moved the rocks and grass from underneath it. He educated me on caring for the tree and how to shake the branches after watering so they don't burn."

"They came to my residence and provided a cost and time estimate in a friendly neighborly manner. They stayed in touch to confirm our scheduled work date and time. They were punctual and thorough in explaining how the work would be done and listened when I commented on the locations of sprinklers and best approaches as to keep our lawn from unsightly track marks. The work was completed professionally as per our agreement. I would highly recommend them, and will use them for future landscaping work."

"This summer and last Patrick and Aaron assisted me in a quite a few projects, including sealing log checks, creating railing gate for me spa, sanding and finishing decking, and even landscaping work. They are prompt, efficient and fair. In Missoula, it is rare to find a company that will do what they say when they say it - and these guys do just that. They're good at brainstorming to find solutions to unusual project issues."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

If the roots are still alive, the dead tree will usually try to put out new shoots. That doesn’t mean the tree will survive or that the dead parts of a tree will come back to life. If parts of the tree have died and turned gray or rotten, nothing will bring them back to life and they need to be safely removed.

Unfortunately, palm tree stumps are one of the most difficult types to remove due to how their roots grow. Unlike other trees, palm tree roots grow horizontally and vertically. Palm tree roots grow as deep as three feet into the ground, although soil and growing conditions could mean they go as far as 50 inches into the earth.

If you want to be able to repurpose the grass in the area where you removed a stump later, you’ll have to dig quite deep—and perhaps wide—to trim away all the roots.

There are two types of arborists: certified and consulting. A certified arborist is licensed and equipped to provide tree pruning, planting, fertilizing, monitoring, transplanting, treatment, and removal services. A consulting arborist specializes in tree appraisals, diagnosing problems and recommending treatments for illnesses. However, they will not provide these services themselves. Most consulting arborists are certified arborists who can refer you to a tree service that can administer the correct treatments.

Tree roots can take weeks to years to die, depending on the method you use. Chemical herbicides take the least amount of time—typically between three and four weeks—while homemade methods, like covering an old stump with leaves, could take between seven and eight years. If you’re unsure which method to use or how quickly you need to act, consulting with a pro is always a good idea.

While there is a lot of debate about whether boiling water is strong enough to kill tree roots, it is not best to remove the roots from large, old trees. You may be able to weaken young roots enough to remove them manually, but boiling water will likely not do the trick for large root systems.
