"Chad and Scott did a fantastic job, from concept to completion of our project. We needed an interior wall, framing, door, drywall, texture, & painting, & all the details to enclose our kitchen from our entry. They understood our concept, and had the work done from start to finish in 2 weeks. Meticulous, detail-oriented, polite, & fun to have them here in our home are how we would describe our relationship with Chad & Scott. They even let us keep adding other small projects along with the wall construction, always being cheerful & accommodating. We would definitely recommend them to our friends & neighbors for any projects! Susan & Larry"

"I had 2 very tall, 40 year old cottonwood trees in my yard that were partly hanging over my house. The yard provided no access for a lift bucket so I needed a tree company that was able to cut these trees down by climbing them. It was going to be a big challenge. I called 8 tree companies in Billings and only 3 of them returned my call. Joey Ogburn, owner of Arbor Elite, was the first to call me back with a bid. Joey impressed me from the very beginning. He was professional, knowledgeable, punctual and willing to tackle this challenging job. He sent me his proof of insurance, his bid sheet, business license and independent contractor license before starting the work. On the day he was scheduled to start, he showed up on time with his crew and specialized equipment. My wife and I watched him work, as did the neighbors. The trees had to be climbed and cut from the top down. It truly was impressive, amazing and crazy watching Joey and his crew cut these huge trees down piece by piece, all without a lift bucket. This job required a high level of expertise and Joey brought it all. A large part of one tree was hanging over the house so those pieces were tied off and lowered to the ground after being cut. Doing that required ropes, pulleys and other hand operated mechanical devices. Joey was organized and paid constant attention to the safety of his crew and the protection of my property. When these huge trees were down, the wood was all neatly stacked out of the way, the stumps were ground down and the yard was cleaned up. I couldn’t have been more pleased with Joey and Arbor Elite. I expect him to be around for a long time. He has a great combination of work ethic, business professionalism, technical knowledge, proper equipment and positive attitude. He’s also just a really nice guy. I highly recommend him. Thanks Joey!"

Flooring Installation questions, answered by experts

No, when done correctly, removing the tile shouldn’t damage the subfloor. However, if there was pre-existing damage to the subfloor from standard use or lack of maintenance, the subfloor may need repairs. For example, if the contractors notice mold growth on the subfloor or an uneven surface, you may need more extensive services before installing new tile.

If you DIY tile removal, remove the tiles one step at a time, individually removing the tile, grout, and mortar to prevent unnecessarily damaging the subfloor. Depending on the age of your home, consider having a professional inspect the subfloor to ensure it’s in good enough condition to lay new tile.

Uneven floors often signal structural issues in a home, so taking them seriously is vital. If you buy an older home with slightly uneven floors, check that your inspector thoroughly inspects the foundation to catch any potential issues early. And if you notice that your floors are becoming more uneven over time, call a pro to check your foundation ASAP.

Sheet vinyl is among the most affordable and durable flooring options, with prices as low as $0.50 per square foot and a lifespan of 10 to 20 years. Other inexpensive and durable choices include standard vinyl plank ($2 to $7 per square foot), which mimics wood or stone and is great for high-traffic areas. Laminate flooring ($1 to $6 per square foot), linoleum, carpeting, and concrete can also be cost-effective options, with prices starting around $2 per square foot.

Squeaking floors don’t usually pose an immediate safety risk. It can be the result of normal settlement, changes in humidity, or natural wear. Uneven or warped floors do pose a trip risk, so you should call a pro for a repair. This is especially true if you notice visible signs of rot or deterioration. Rarely, a creaking floor can signal structural issues, but there are usually other signs.

There are a few different types of finishes to choose from for the final step of the project.

Water-based polyurethane sealants emit fewer odors and fumes but dry quickly, which can pose a challenge when trying to get a smooth coat. Oil-based polyurethane sealants let out more odors and fumes into the air (it’s especially important to wear a respirator if you choose this type), but they take longer to dry, which can be more forgiving during the finishing step.

Some may prefer wood oil to polyurethane because rather than creating a layer, it becomes part of the wood. Wood oil takes longer to dry, and is less resistant to wear and tear; however, it creates a natural-looking result by enhancing the grain of the wood.
