"Southern Magnolia Fencing has installed 2 fences for us. The first fence installation had some unforeseen problems with a retaining wall. Rick found a solution, with no added expense, and the fence is beautiful. This work was done in the extreme heat of the summer. His crew never complained. They were courteous, respectful of our property, and finished in a timely manner. The second fence was installed the same way-timely, the crew was courteous and the fence is a wonderful addition. Neither fence installation exceeded the price that was quoted. I would highly recommend Southern Magnolia Fencing."

"They did great work. Their fence system with the metal posts is super sturdy and very high quality. Will recommend to friends and family. It was a little more than standard wood posts but after replacing an 8 year old fence it was well worth the investment."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

Making a homemade pallet fence involves marking out the fence line and leveling the ground along it. Then, install metal or wooden fence posts that you slide the pallets on top of (two posts per pallet). Fasten them together with 2x4 wood boards that act as an extra layer, keeping the pallet fence secure.

The best under-gate dog barrier is one that extends to the ground. This effectively keeps dogs in and won't give them room to squeeze through. However, dogs that dig can still get under the barrier. Deter digging by paving the ground beneath the gate or filling it in with rocks or gravel. Be careful using wire to extend dog gates, as the sharp ends may cut or hurt your dog's paws.

Ideally, your concrete should set slightly above ground at an angle sloping away from the fence post. This will add extra support and allow water to run away from the wood fence post. Keeping water out will help prevent wood rot. Additionally, you can add soil on top of the concrete for a seamless finish.

Most homeowners don't need to inform their neighbors before constructing a fence, according to the law, but you will need to make sure that you’re building on the property line or on your side of the property line. Otherwise, the neighbor could complain, which would require you to tear down and reinstall the fence. In any case, keeping them in the loop is the neighborly thing to do!

Whether you inform your neighbors or not, always use property records and a land survey to ensure your fence stays within your property boundaries.

How long a fence lasts, including a split rail fence, will depend on the material from which it’s made. The average lifespan of a wood fence is about 15 to 20 years. However, split rail fences made out of premium materials, like composite, vinyl, steel, or aluminum, can last for 25 to 30 years or more, especially if you take good care of the material and carry out necessary maintenance.
