"I highly recommend this company. My insurance company tried to lowball me after storm damage. However, this awesome roofing company met the appraiser at my home and pointed out all the damage the insurance company conveniently overlooked. Due to their help, they got the insurance to cover the whole job. The roofing company is fast, very hardworking and very professional. I’ve recommended them to my friends, neighbors and family members. Personally I have used this company twice with incredible results."

"I needed a gutter section replaced on a commercial property in order to pass inspection from the city. I was running out of time to meet the deadline for the final inspection and they took on the challenge of repairing the section of gutter. I met the deadline and was able pass the inspection with no problem. They were absolutely amazing in the service they provided and went above and beyond to ensure that it was finished on time. I have excellent things to say about this company. I’m so grateful for their service and the understanding they had for my situation. Well done guys!"

"Brandon Gentges is a life saver. I had some siding and roofing damage due to a severe weather storm, so I called two contractors and asked them to provide estimates. Both companies failed to show up or provide estimates. I really needed to get the house fixed but did know how to accomplish that if I couldn't get a contractor to show up. I talked to a single lady friend of mine and she recommended Brandon. I called Brandon and he came to inspect the damage, and provided a fair estimate within a week. He also worked with my insurance company, providing needed documentation. When it came time to do the work, he was on schedule, weather permitting and all work was completed in a timely manner. Brandon and company did an excellent job. You can count on Brandon Gentges!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

A roof replacement will usually include removal of your old roof, shingle replacement, and a new roof underlayment, but it may only include adding new shingles if you’re layering new shingles over the old shingles. If you have signs of roof leaks or your roofer finds water damage to the roof decking underneath your old roof, it can also include replacement of the OSB or plywood decking that lays over your rafters and supports the roofing material above.

The proper specifications for furring strips can vary, so you should always consult the roofing manufacturer's guidelines or your roofer. However, general recommendations are as follows:

  • Thickness: Furring strips are typically 1 to 1-1/2 inches thick, meaning standard 1-by or 2-by lumber works well. In areas with extreme winds, a thinner strip may be preferred to limit how much air can get under the roof and cause uplift. A thicker strip can add slightly more insulation but will also increase installation costs.

  • Spacing: The recommended spacing for furring strips is between 12 and 24 inches apart on center. Proper spacing is crucial for ensuring good airflow, adequate drainage, noise reduction, and better energy efficiency. The ideal spacing can depend on the roof's pitch and the specific type of metal roofing being installed.

You shouldn’t put a new roof underlayment over an old one for a few reasons. Old felt must be removed in order to assess the condition of your roof decking, such as rotting wood or other structural issues. Also, if your roofer doesn't install a fresh layer of felt as is required by shingle manufacturers, your warranty may be voided. Finally, old underlayment removal is often included in the cost of roof repair or replacement, so there's no real benefit to leaving it on before installing a new layer.

If you’re choosing between a roof overlay and a tear-off, opt for a tear-off and full roof replacement instead of a roof overlay if possible. The cost savings from an overlay can easily be eclipsed by repair costs, the effects of structural damage from the additional weight, and needing to replace your roof sooner than expected. A full replacement will last longer and is less likely to need damage repaired over time.

A shingle roof costs between $7,500 and $24,000 in total. The exact cost depends on the size of your roof and the number of bundles of shingles required. A bundle of shingles typically costs between $40 and $60, though contractors might be able to get a lower price than you’d get buying from a local hardware store.
