Customers say: Quick response

"Mr. Rantz is a friendly, down-to-earth guy who definitely knows how to get rid of a tree stump. Severe storms rolled through NW Springfield in late April 2025. Unfortunately, we had to have a maple tree cut down. The tree company’s guy wanted $1150 to grind the stump and haul the sawdust. Mr. Rantz did it for $600 and did as thorough a job as I could’ve asked for. Five out of five stars. If you need to get rid of a stump on your property, hire Sam Rantz’s Stump Grinding - you’ll be glad you did."

"We have used TruFast Tree Service three times now. Right after we bought our house they came out and cleaned up a severely overgrown tree that was growing onto our roof and chimney. A couple years later we had them come out and just trim up that same tree and one in our front yard. And today they came out and cleaned out some conflicting branches and removed a dead limb off our front yard tree. Every time the workers are polite, professional, and know what they are doing. They do a great job and clean up any mess. I couldn't be happier with their service."

"The crew was very polite. The tree-climber was very careful not to cause damage to my neighbors property. The tree removable project was started sooner than expected, and completed in a very timely manner. The only issue I have with the work is that the logs were not cut to agreed upon length, and the logs were not all stacked. Despite these minor issues, I would hire their services again. Nice job Specialty Family Tree Service."

"Overall a very good experience. Andy, the owner, supervised 3 workers: they were punctual, professional, did what we agreed and left the area tidy. The estimate was what I paid and that seemed a fair price according to my research. I would definately use this company again.

"Hill Clan Service completed our tree limb removal job within two days of calling. They are a family business and even went beyond what I had initially requested. Will has awesome tree climbing skills and was able to remove limbs well above our house with ease. They have reasonable rates. I will use them again in the future and also recommend them to others needing tree service."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

It may not be worth it to rake every leaf in your yard, but it’s necessary to remove the majority of leaves to prevent them from smothering grass growth on your lawn. However, raking leaves isn’t your only option for leaf removal. You can remove leaves easily with a leaf blower or compost or mulch them with your lawn mower to repurpose them to help grow your garden or yard.

It takes anywhere from three to seven years for a stump to decompose on its own. This timeframe can depend on the kind of tree and your climate. The lower to the ground the stump is, the faster it rots. If you kill a tree stump with salt, boiling water, herbicide, light deprivation, or burning, the tree stump decomposes faster.

Any cutting of tree roots can hurt or kill a tree, which is why it's recommended you don’t do it unless the roots are damaging or invasive on a nearby structure like your home. You should never cut more than 15 percent of above-ground tree roots at one time. If you have any questions about cutting tree roots, contact your local arborist.

It is possible to burn out a tree stump if it is dried out and in an area of your property with a large buffer. Drill holes in the stump and dig around the base so it burns more easily. Then, build a small campfire on top using kindling and firewood. You’ll need enough to keep the fire going for many hours to completely burn out the stump, especially if it’s large.

Monitor the fire closely to ensure it doesn’t spread, and have a hose on hand if it starts to get out of control. When the fire is out, break apart the burned stump and dig out what’s left of it.

If this sounds like a good option, learn more about how to burn a tree stump before attempting it, as it does come with risks.

Make sure the tree roots soak around a day before you dig the tree up for the transplant. Keep the roots wet while the tree is above ground. After the transplant is finished, provide consistent water every day for the first month or so. You don’t want to overwater the tree, but you do want to keep the roots wet so they can thrive in their new environment.
