"Chesterfield Fence and Deck repaired the storm damage to our deck from a year ago. We are extremely happy with everything they did for us. Melissa and Mustafa helped us get started and Suvad did the work. It was unbelievable how professional and courteous he was, and he went the extra mile a few times such as tightening screws that were not flush with the decking to begin with, replacing screws to the posts that were of more proper size, double checking replacement step samples even bringing us samples to make sure we were happy. This guy is amazing, ask for him! Thank you Chesterfield Fence and Deck!"

"We had a wooden privacy fence Installed by Jenkins Fencing and we are absolutely happy with the finished product. Not only is the product and work great, the service is amazing as well. The owner kept us up to date through out the whole process and was able to work with us on a time that best suited us. The weather was a minor hiccup in the process, but even with that they were able to finish our fence in quick and timely manor. The installers that came out were very polite, and did an excellent job on the fence. I would highly recommend using this company for your fencing needs."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

Both nails and screws are common in fence construction, including on pickets. Some builders prefer to use nails when connecting the pickets to the rails and screws when connecting the rails to the posts. However, the best option usually depends on the type of wood fencing and the variety of wood you choose.

You can sometimes install a fence over a gas line. Fence installation typically requires a two-foot depth for posts, so if the lines are shallower than two feet, you cannot put a fence post over the line. You’ll need to call 811 to get the gas lines located and marked before you start the project.

Yes, you can use a floor jack to remove fence posts. Attach a stem to the base of the fence post so you can position the floor jack underneath. The stem can be a scrap piece of wood attached with nails or a sturdy nail itself. Put the jack beneath the stem and push the lever to lift up on the fence post and remove it from the ground.

In most cases, you will need a building permit to put up a vinyl fence, especially if the fence is sitting on or close to your property line. You can ask your local building department or  fence installation company if your fence project will require a permit. If so, you can expect it to cost between $20 and $60. Your fence installer should pull the permit for you. Building without a permit could eventually require you to pay again to remove the fence and reinstall it after getting the job approved.

Vinyl fencing stays popular with homeowners because it’s durable and aesthetically pleasing. In addition to offering plenty of privacy, vinyl fences have a life span of 20 to 30 years with minimal maintenance. You don’t have to worry about these fences warping or rotting due to moisture, and this material doesn’t contain toxic chemicals.
