"It's only right that I write a five-star review for the exceptional masonry and tuckpoint work done on my brick porch by the skilled team at Charlie's Tuckpointing and Bricklaying. Charlie took the time to thoroughly inspect my porch and explain the recommended repairs in detail. From the initial consultation to the final touches, Charlie and his team were professional, prompt, and meticulous. The team's years of experience and high-level craftsmanship are reflected in the miracle work done on my porch. They skillfully repaired and replaced damaged bricks, creating a seamless blend with the existing ones. The tuckpointing work was equally impressive, restoring my porch to its former glory. Charlie even patched up some concrete steps and didn't charge me. Not only was the team's workmanship outstanding, but they took great care to ensure that my property was left clean at the end of each workday. Their attention to detail was evident in every aspect of their work. Charlie's customer service was also outstanding. He was always available to answer any questions and kept me informed throughout the project. Overall, I'm happy with the work done on my porch by Charlie's Tuckpointing. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for masonry and tuckpointing services. They are an honest, hard-working team of skilled professionals dedicated to delivering quality work and exceptional customer service. Charlie is veteran friendly, and his rates are more than reasonable. He and his crew are the people's champs, and I can't praise them highly enough."

"Martinez is very professional, he is on time and he does very good work. Real nice guy too. Not the least expensive as well as not the most expensive proposal I received for my chimney, but still, a very reasonable price. Because of the fine work he did on my chimney, he is the only person I will call for any future masonry projects at my home. You will not be disappointed with his professionalism or his work."

"Adrian of Vargas Masonry and Roofing stopped by to provide an estimate for tuckpointing and chimney work on our historic Centennial Home. Adrian and Marie were prompt with a very competitive estimate which we accepted. They were both very receptive to addressing any questions or concerns we had prior to, during and for the final walkthrough. The crew performing the work very professional, very considerate to our property and provided us continuous updates as to the work being performed. The work performed consisted of tuckpointing two sides of the house along with chimney work and placing a cap on the two chimneys. As stated in a previous review, Vargas was honest, on time, and competitively priced! I'll continue to use Vargas Masonry and Roofing for the future work that I need on the interior brickwork and interior limestone foundation of our historic home."

"Quacker's Waterproofing was wonderful. When they came for the estimate, they were fast and no nonsense. They weren't trying to convince me of things that needed doing or dramatizing the work for more money. When I had questions about the work, they didn't make me feel dumb but took extra time out of their day so that I had peace of mind with my foundation. I hope to never need their help again, but I will definitely call them if I do. Special kudos to Rob!"

"Very well, hard working crew very polite left the job site clean and very prompt. No down time, I would use them again and urge you to consider them. Price was better than the big names in the industry. All the workers had a great attitude doing a difficult job in a basement that has low ceilings and they had to carry all materials in and out of the basement in buckets."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

If your old bricks are in decent condition and you have the space to store them where they’ll be protected from the elements, keeping old bricks is often worthwhile. You’d spend anywhere from $70 to a few hundred dollars to have them removed from your property, in which case you won’t be able to use them for future projects. Holding on to old bricks in good condition means you can use them later for other DIY projects, potentially saving yourself some money on disposal and new materials down the road.

In some cases, black stains on brick are caused by organic substances like algae and mold. However, it's more likely that the black spots you're noticing on your bricks come from carbon from vehicle exhaust or soot. Black stains can usually be removed by scrubbing the brick with a brush and masonry cleaner or power washing.

Unless you’ve worked in the masonry industry before, it is in your best interest if you hire a pro for any masonry needs. Masonry-related jobs require a high skill level and can be extremely time-consuming. If anything goes wrong, a licensed and insured masonry contractor would be able to take care of the subsequent repairs, giving you additional peace of mind.

No, you don’t need to soak the brick before cutting it by hand. In fact, cutting a wet brick can make it harder to see your score lines and may cause the chisel to slip. Soaking is sometimes used with power tools to reduce dust, but for hand-cutting, it’s best to work with dry bricks for better control and visibility.

Yes, but used or reclaimed bricks can be more brittle, cracked, or uneven than new bricks, so they’re harder to cut cleanly by hand. For that reason, you should take extra care when scoring and striking, and expect a higher chance of breakage. If a brick feels especially fragile, score deeper before attempting to split it.
