"Fred called within minutes of my request on Angi and asked to come out and give a quote. He arrived promptly and gave us a reasonable quote. We made a down payment and he started work 2 days later. He kept me up to date on his schedule and showed up when he said he would. He finished job on schedule and cleaned up as he worked. He replaced all boards on deck and stained. Did a great job. I would not hesitate to hire him again if I gave another project to do."

"Rodney does superb work and is very fair on pricing. He communicated timely and extremely well and gave great advice. He cleaned my concrete block retaining wall and my sidewalks and concrete decks despite the lousy weather. I will hire him again next year to keep his work fresh. Heâ s a pro!"

"They were extremely kind and helpful in working with me as I navigated trying to restore and repair the deck on my parents' house that I had inherited. Not only were they very communicative, but were prompt and showed up when they said they would (which was very appreciative as someone with a busy schedule). The quality of work and professionalism was top tier, and my brother and I are very pleased with the outcome of the project and how our 20+ year old deck now looks relatively new. Costs were upfront and there were no hidden charges or fees upon completion. We would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for power washing and deck resealing/minor repair, and would definitely use them again for any powerwashing needs."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

A deck that isn’t attached to a house is called a floating or freestanding deck. These standalone decks are built near ground level, so they usually don’t need deck stairs. Some don’t even require permits. Generally speaking, building a floating deck is faster and more DIY-friendly than constructing one that’s connected to your home.

The best way to sand a deck is by cleaning it, sanding the boards and stairs with 60- or 80-grit sandpaper, and sanding the railings and posts with 80-grit sandpaper. You should sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid damaging the timber. When sanding your deck, use medium pressure and aim for an even sand. Pressing too hard with a sander can damage decks, as most are softwoods.

Whether to paint or stain a deck depends on your personal preference for appearance and budget. Stain provides a natural look with a range of undertones, is typically less expensive, and may only require one coat, but it does not last as long as paint. Paint offers a sleeker finish with a virtually unlimited color palette. Both options will protect your deck from outdoor elements like rain, snow, and general wear and tear.

As with patios, there are many types of deck choices to choose from to add personalization to your home. Some common deck options include:

  • Attached decks are anchored to the home and include simple ground-level options or multi-level structures with stairways and separate landings.

  • Detached island decks are not attached to the home; they’re a freestanding structure in the yard.

  • Wraparound decks connect the back of the house with at least one other side and often are built with railings for safety.

  • Multi-level decks connect your deck through varying levels of elevation, featuring landings that are attached to stairs.

Covering your deck with a breathable tarp can protect it from snow, ice, and cold winter temperatures. This is a good winterizing solution if you don’t plan to use your deck at all during the colder months. However, it might be best to skip the tarp if you’ll still be walking on your deck or using it in a limited capacity.
