"John and Karen are the best. Karen came out, offered examples and suggestions of work to be done. John came out, measured, ordered product and install was within weeks. Everything was as expected, John is an excellent craftsman, on time, clean, knowledgeable and thorough. He had to get creative in a few areas in our 60 year old home but was able to solve and the cabinets came out great! Highly recommend Karen and John -OBX Specialties- for any and all of your needs. KUDOS to their professionalism and integrity."

"Ok where do I start: Thomas and Justin were phenomenal! They took out my old 30 year old mobile home tub and replaced it with the most amazing walk in shower! It operates and looks beautiful! I cannot thank you enough! They also fixed my walk in shower in the master bathroom (the previous GC did a really sub par job) and I’m so happy that Thomas replaced the sub floor part of that shower and redid the step on it so water didn’t keep getting on the floor. They also redid all the flooring in the master bath, took out the 30 year old vanity and toilet and replaced them with new modern styles that save water and energy. They are coming back to complete the guest bathroom and I’m so excited! They were also straight up about pricing and were always on time, professional and really listened to my vision and gave me input on what would truly work and what wouldn’t and I appreciate that ALOT! Thanks again and see you in February!"

Closets questions, answered by experts

Tiny house living requires creative solutions to the one biggest issue: space. Many people in tiny houses find life most manageable if they practice minimalism. Eliminating excess items and clutter makes the living space feel bigger, which can be a significant mood booster. It can also be challenging to get utilities arranged for a tiny house, and building and zoning codes can and often do present unique challenges to overcome.

Costs depend on material type, size, and additional features like lighting or sliding doors.

Although you can complete a closet frame in just an afternoon, finishing the entire closet will take a few days to a week. However, that’s still not as much as the average time it takes to remodel a closet, which can take anywhere from several weeks to more than a month. That’s because you also have to consider the time it will take to demolish the existing space, plan a new design, order materials, and actually install it.

Adding a mudroom is one of the most budget-friendly home additions compared to other projects, costing between $8,000 and $16,000 on average. Not only is the room often quite small, but it also requires minimal fixtures or wiring to make the room practical. The most costly features include a weatherproof floor and an exterior door.

On average, building a custom or built-in closet costs around $2,100. However, the total price can range from as little as $500 for a simple DIY project to $6,000 or more for a large, high-end custom closet. Most projects typically fall between $1,500 and $5,000.

The final cost depends on several factors, including the closet's size, type, materials, and features. Here is a general cost breakdown by closet type:

  • Reach-in closet: $500 to $1,500

  • Walk-in closet: $750 to $5,000

  • Wardrobe: $2,000 to $6,000 or more

Choosing a prefabricated closet system is generally less expensive than a fully custom build. The scope of design and construction services will also significantly impact the price.
