"Our interaction was great. They went out of their way to accomplish our projects. Have and will continue to call upon Carpenter's Kids for handyman or other services. Have some plumbing work as our next project. We sought a Christian company to do our work and we were not or never have been disappointed."

"We ended up not hiring this contractor. They seemed very attentive but when told we would be getting quotes from other contractors as well as seeing how it all came out compared to the insurance adjusters estimate, I received a text informing they wouldn't be proceeding with the quote. I guess they didn't want themselves pitted against other contractors in the area. Perhaps they are much higher and thats why they assumed we wouldn't hire them (although in the end, it was just them and one other contractor but they made the decision for us, I guess.) I am not sure what we did wrong but since I have never had to go through a homeowner's insurance claim before, I am not sure if it's cool to get several quotes or not. I just figured I'd look around for the best contractor with the best estimate. I can't tell you how their work would have been. Who knows, since they didn't like knowing we'd compare them."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

It's possible to turn your carport into a living space, but there are additional factors to address over turning it into a garage. HVAC, plumbing, and electricity won't be optional, and you'll need finished flooring, drywall, trim work, and legal ceiling height, for starters. Also, keep in mind that living space conversions may require upgrading the foundation underneath, and the permits might be more expensive as well.

Building a barndominium means converting a barn into a house. Barndominiums are becoming popular as spacious and stylish alternatives to typical housing structures. Old barns that become houses traditionally consist of wooden construction. However, newer structures, such as pole barns, often contain metal exteriors and roofs. Converting a metal outbuilding into a house presents an excellent opportunity to create a barndominium from metal.

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

You can choose 5/8-inch plywood or 3/4-inch plywood—anything thinner than these sizes may not withstand the impact of debris propelled by strong winds or can be easily torn off by intruders. Remember that the durability of the wood board is crucial, particularly for safeguarding your windows during severe storms. The effectiveness of using wood boards for protecting the investment you made in your home relies on using the appropriate material and ensuring proper installation.
