"Terrific - huge relief! Wish now that I had not procrastinated getting an estimate. I simply had no time previously and now that I had 2 weeks' time off for the Christmas holiday season, decided I would undertake what I assumed would be the unpleasant task of researching companies, securing an estimate, and beginning to face what I was sure was a significant mold problem. I have a 58 year-old home (which we love and hope to remain in forever - as we moved here for the ranch layout and hardwoods - perfect for 2 family members in wheelchairs). Unfortunately, our beautiful but older home has old, corroding copper pipes in the walls - and pipe in the wall beneath kitchen sink had a few leaks that leaked over time into the wall. After plumbers cut open sheetrock to repair sections of leaking copper pipe (twice) ...as the home warranty plan we have is great and covers removal and replacement of corroded sections of copper pipe for a small co-pay (but only covers removal & replacement of a few inches of pipe around the corroded area rather than covering replacement of the entire 5 ft run of pipe) and we've had a couple sections of pipe in the wall under sink replaced. Each time a section of pipe was replaced, plumbers opened up more sheet rock in the area to expose the pipe - which also exposed mold on a 2 x 4 and insulation in that area. Plumbers had also quoted cost of replacing the entire run of pipe - just in case I ever decide to replace my lower kitchen cabinets, noting that would be a good time to get rid of the entire run of copper pipe. So - back to the mold issue I had avoided for so long, assuming it would be expensive. After getting a few names of mold remediation companies from Angie's List, I quickly read the reviews & noticed several reviews for Advanta Clean of Kansas City mentioned this was not a company looking to secure work if professional assistance was not truly needed and often simply provide a recommendation and advice on how the homeowner can take care of their smaller-than-anticipated work on their own and avoid costly repairs. Reading the reviews provided some relief, and I hoped to get a visit and free estimate from Kevin, as reviews of him were really good. What I actually experienced when Kevin visited our home can't easily be described. My worries and concerns were immediately alleviated. Kevin was highly professional, describing national guidelines recommendations, noting our issue was less substantial than we had thought, and provided 3 different approaches that could be taken - detailing each. The first approach (and one he recommended) was free - simply cleaning up the area ourselves with vinegar and allow it to dry well, along with using a dehumidifier in the house (as humidity was reading high). The second approach (if uncomfortable cleaning the small area of mold on our own) was in the $350 range plus cost for asbestos testing (necessary in a home of our age to ensure crews would be safe while completing repairs) with asbestos testing through an independent company of our choosing (though Kevin could provide info if needed) running ~$400 (this entire second approach was deemed an unnecessary but available option by Kevin), and the third approach was ~$1200 (which covered a significant amount of work...removing lower kitchen cabinets, all sheetrock & insulation behind them, cleaning up the area and using HEPA fans) which Kevin noted was an 'aggressive' but available approach - should we prefer that. I had feared hearing $5k to $6k - so had done nothing for far too long. I wish I had called earlier!! I now have a plan that costs me nothing for now - which I feel safe with (priceless). And, since I already intended to pull out & replace lower kitchen cabinets after saving up a bit (& also replace the 5 ft run of copper pipe in the wall that started all these issues) I now have a solid idea of what it will cost to do the level of agressive mold remediation that I prefer to do (pulling out/checking/replacing insulation near the area) - once I'm ready to be without a functioning kitchen for a bit. Meanwhile, I am very comfortable managing the small area of visible mold on my own. And, will definitely be calling Kevin at AdvantaClean whenever I get around to replacing my lower kitchen cabinets, to do the level of unnecessary but precautionary checking I'd prefer to do. An outstanding, highly professional company that I will be using in the future, and would recommend to friends and family. THANKS!!"

"Workers did a great job. They worked until the job was done, and they did it quickly. Gave 4 stars because our mold test came back positive for mold and we had to pay for the mold retest when they said we did not have to pay for it."

Small jobs welcome

"Jeremiah came out and tested the air and moisture and other items to determine if I had mold in my basement. After getting the test results there was evidence of mold and he recommended a company that provides a do it yourself kit for mold remediation. (Not cheap). After getting the items and realizing that there was more work, it would have been better for me to let my insurance company handle this as I do have coverage for mold/fungi. Though having a professional do the work is expensive, from what Jeremiah mentioned, it does not guarantee that the work will be complete or the source of the problem taken care of. He mentioned most companies will take care of the mold but not necessarily the cause of the mold. For this I would have to contact another company."

"Smart Environmental has excellent customer service and incredibly honest people. They saved us thousands of dollars by stressing the importance of testing our old vermiculite insulation rather than assuming it had asbestos. While another company took a look at our attic and gave us a quote for over $3,000 of asbestos remediation, Pony described that many inspectors see old insulation and assume it is asbestos, but that is not always the case. Pony took a sample from our attic, got it tested for us, and promptly sent us the negative test results the next day. We could not be more grateful for Ponys honesty and the diligence he took in actually testing our insulation instead of just assuming we needed a costly remediation."

"Highly HIGHLY recommend Spencer and his team. I had been having some severe respiratory issues for several months after a water damage and his easy to read test results confirmed my suspicions of mold. He immediately contacted my insurance company to advocate for housing arrangements for me and my pets. The treatment was quick compared to old methods and my health started making huge improvements in just a few days time. That alone was so worth it - beyond grateful to be getting my home and my health back."

Mold Testing and Remediation questions, answered by experts

Mold remediation in Lees Summit may require shutting down your HVAC system if mold is found in ductwork, and could involve inspecting electrical wiring if water damage is present. Plumbing repairs are often needed if leaks caused the mold. Watch for musty odors from vents, water stains near outlets, or changes in system performance, as these can indicate broader impacts during the remediation process.

Helpful?

After mold remediation in Lees Summit, schedule a post-remediation inspection and monitor indoor humidity with a hygrometer, aiming for levels below 60%. Check treated areas weekly for new stains or odors, replace HVAC filters, and continue using dehumidifiers in problem areas. Keep detailed records of all work performed, and inspect basements and crawl spaces seasonally to prevent future mold growth in the local climate.

Helpful?

For small mold spots under 10 square feet in Lees Summit, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Use unscented detergent and water to scrub the area, then dry it thoroughly with fans or a dehumidifier. Address any leaks immediately and keep windows open for ventilation. If the mold returns, spreads to drywall, or affects your health, contact a professional for further assessment.

Helpful?

In Lees Summit, homes are prime candidates for mold testing if you notice persistent musty odors, visible mold growth, or water stains—especially after heavy rain or basement flooding, which are common locally. Homes with crawl spaces, older construction, or frequent humidity issues should be checked. If indoor allergies worsen or you see peeling paint and damp drywall, consider a professional evaluation.

Helpful?

In Lees Summit, keep a digital hygrometer for humidity monitoring, a moisture meter for detecting hidden dampness, and a basic mold test kit. Stock N95 masks, gloves, safety goggles, plastic sheeting for containment, and a HEPA vacuum for cleanup. Essential cleaning supplies include unscented detergent, bleach, and vinegar. Dehumidifiers and sump pump tools are especially useful due to frequent basement moisture and local humidity.
