"I discovered the problems with the debris and the damper when I had gas logs installed. I called 7 chimney sweeps from Angie's List. I reached voicemail at five, was scheduled two weeks out for the 6th but Eric answered and said he could squeeze in a visit to give an estimate that day. He was on time, very courteous and informative. He gave me an estimate for everything except the few broken tiles that could not be seen. Eric made an appointment to come back within 5 days to do the work. He was willing to work around my schedule and showed up at 7:30am. His son, who was also very courteous and professional, helped him with the work. They carefully explained the possible consequences of leaving the tiles broken (a carbon monoxide leak into the half of the chimney housing the furnace pipe, and possibly into the house) and did not charge too much extra to repair the tiles. They left the house very neat, after having carefully covered the entire workspace. Later that night I ran into a problem with the pilot light on the gas fireplace. Ashes away had not installed the gas logs, but it was after hours and I had phone numbers for both Eric and his son, so I called both. Eric answered and his son called back within about a minute. Eric walked me through the problem with the pilot light and stayed on the phone until I had it working. I found Ashes Away to be very reasonably priced but I was much more impressed by their knowledge and professionalism. I know the devastation that can be caused by chimney fires and carbon monoxide leaks and would not want to choose a chimney sweep and repair person based on price alone. "Last fall I bought a house with a gas fireplace, and during the inspection it was noted the damper was blocked. The inspector thought that there was probably debris in the chimney causing the blockage. So I hired Absolute Clean to unblock and clean the chimney. They found that the blockage was caused not by debris but by a piece of mortar protruding from the masonry. In fact the chimney had probably never been used even though the house was 47 years old. So it turned out that there wasn't really a whole lot of chimney sweeping to do as far as build-up, but there was a little debris which they cleaned out, and they checked it to make sure that it was safe to use. They showed me how to turn it on safely and gave me some tips on positioning the logs, and where to buy gas logs if I wanted a different look. Very nice fellows.

"I contacted John Craft, whom we have used successfully for years for our current chimney, to do an evaluation at our new residence that we were have having inspected 3 days later.  He juggled his schedule to do the evaluation when all of the other inspectors would be there.  He was prompt, and though as always, and we very much appreciated both his flexibility and wealth of knowledge that he shared with us regarding the new fireplace/chimney.  He did not require an unneeded sweep prior to the evaluation as it did not need one, probably due to non use by the owner.  Again, we've used Gateway Chimney Sweeps for several years now at our current address.  John operates with a great amount of integrity and we've never had to question the quality of his work."
