"Contacted this company three months ago. For removal of a beehive and masonry work around the chimney, the company came out twice to to review the work needed to be done, sent a contract to our company and then waited on an appointment to get the work completed. The company was unresponsive and finally scheduled the work to be completed. The contract sent reads money would be paid upon completion of the project and sent an invoice prior to the job being completed. I called this company all week, sent an email and they failed to show up for the job nor did they bother to respond to our emails and phone calls. Unprofessional and lack of communication led us to secure another contractor."

Chimney Caps questions, answered by experts

Ridge vents can last as long as your roof does. As long as your ridge vents were installed correctly by a qualified professional, they will need very little upkeep. Inspecting your ridge vents annually to ensure they aren’t cracked, clogged, or leaking will help prolong their lifespan.

More and more insurance companies are writing torch down applications out of their liability insurance for contractors. If torch down is covered, they generally require a worker to stay on site for two hours after the last flame is extinguished.

For this reason, cold application modified bitumen—also known as “peel and stick”—is becoming more popular, and torch down is decreasing in popularity. Modified bitumen is taking its place, as it uses both hot and cold applications.

You should plan on replacing architectural shingles every 20 to 25 years in most cases, although you could see up to around 30 years of useful life. Replacing your roof before it reaches the end of its life is a good idea because it reduces the risk of roof failure and roof leaks, which can contribute to extensive property damage and hefty repair costs. Your shingles’ life span can be shorter if you live in an area that sees a lot of extreme weather, so plan on getting a roof inspection done every few years to identify the best timeline for replacement.

A shingle roof costs between $7,500 and $24,000 in total. The exact cost depends on the size of your roof and the number of bundles of shingles required. A bundle of shingles typically costs between $40 and $60, though contractors might be able to get a lower price than you’d get buying from a local hardware store.

You can install solar panels on a flat or pitched roof, but keep in mind that they will need to rest at a 30- to 50-degree tilt for optimal sun absorption. It costs more to install solar panels on a flat roof because you will need to install a framing system and likely hire a structural engineer. If your roof has a pitch of more than 40 degrees, it may not be a good candidate for solar panels.
