"I hired this company to extend the natural gas in my house and would definitely recommend them. I felt that the plumber who did the installation really knew what he was doing and seemed like a great guy. The installation went well and the price was fair."

"Mayo Plumbing is different from all the rest. They use data and research to inform their work. Before calling Mayo I had two different plumbers look at our new (very old) house. The first said, "St. Louis has hard water - you NEED a water softener." The second said, "St. Louis has great water - you DO NOT need a water softener." Mayo said, "What did the test results say? No one can tell you you need a water softener without testing your water first." BINGO. They tested our water and determined we DO NOT need a water softener. Same approach for our broken shower. The mayo plumber actually researched the issue, spending time with the paperwork and on the phone with the Kohler rep to determine exactly what we need to do, before making a wild guess and upselling us. I've never seen a plumber like this - these guys are SMART and will be our go-to provider!"

"I was impressed from the moment the owner introduced himself and his assistant to the time they left my home dirt and soot free. Not only did they do a fine job cleaning he also checked the dryer vent. Will call them again next year.

"Got back to me quickly, fixed the issue with my hot water heater rather than having to buy a new one, very thankful. He checked out my heater and air conditioner while he was there and I will have him back to service my AC. Great guy, very friendly, took the time to explain all he was doing. Highly recommend him."

"Did a fine job installing water heater, but then the installer apparently did not push out the air in the lines through the house. The faucet in the kitchen then loss water pressure since there was debris from the old water heater in the lines. I was told there would be no charge when they came back to investigate for the inspection fee, but there was. I made my case and then it went away. Overall, they did a great job with the work. Ted and Glen are the ones I would want back. Very experienced at the trade."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

A good hardness level for drinking water can vary based on personal preferences, but an ideal level is 3.5 to 7 GPG. This means your water isn’t soft or hard. However, some people prefer the “fresh” taste from the minerals in hard water, while others like the smoother, “slippery” texture of soft water.

No. You should never directly drain a water softener into a sewer cleanout. This practice is illegal in many areas because it could allow raw sewage to get into your drinking water and make you seriously ill. Many places have codes requiring a specific seal, pipe, and a large air gap between a water softener and a sewage cleanout. Check out Florida's Plumbing Building Code as an example of what these restrictions might look like.

No, a water descaler won't descale pipes. The charged water running through the pipes may very slowly dissolve mineral deposits and hold them inside the water, but it's a very gradual process. If your pipes do need descaling, it's much better to get a local plumber to descale your pipes.

The main difference between a water softener and a water filter is what they remove from the water. A water softener is specifically designed to remove hard minerals, while a filter removes a wider range of contaminants above a certain size, such as bacteria and other impurities. If your primary goal is to remove minerals, a softener is the best choice. If you want to remove various contaminants for safety or taste, a filter is more suitable. Filters are also typically less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply's specific issues, you may need to install both systems for comprehensive treatment.

A water softener is a worthwhile investment if you live in an area with hard water. While hard water is safe to drink, it contains minerals like calcium and magnesium that can cause significant problems over time. These minerals build up inside pipes, reducing water flow and eventually corroding the plumbing system, which can lead to leaks and a shortened lifespan. Hard water also damages fixtures and appliances, potentially resulting in costly repairs. Additionally, it makes soaps and detergents less effective, meaning you'll use more product to get things clean. By installing a water softener, you can prevent these issues. The initial investment is often recouped through long-term savings, including lower energy bills, reduced appliance and plumbing maintenance, and spending less on soap and cleaning supplies. Other benefits include cleaner linens, dishes, and clothing, as well as softer water that is gentler on your skin and hair. In some areas, a water softener can also increase your home's value, making it a valuable long-term investment.
