"Tom and his team did a top notch job on my entire yard. This is the first time my experience with a landscaping company has been good. Tom helped with the selection of plants and offered ideas that I needed for design because I know nothing about plants or landscaping. He was very responsive and his crew was here everyday. They were fast and very professional. I am very happy with the results and he is the guy I’m calling when I need any landscaping done. See you next year Tom! (before & after photos below)"

"James from Metro Lawn Sprinklers & Landscapes "winterized" my Dad's lawn irrigation system on 11/8 in St. Peters. James showed up on time, conducted himself quite professionally and did a fantastic job. I was quite impressed with James AND the work that he did. I would definitely work with Metro Lawn Sprinklers & Landscapes and James again."

Planting Beds Full Of Grasses And Weeds In Less Than Two Weeks, In Spite Of A Four To Six Inch Layer Of Mulch Applied. Additionally, Roots Were Left From Bushes Removed. "This company is very easy to work with. A few years ago we had them put in walkway lighting. They offered to come in and set it up so that we could see how it would look and then they would come back and install more or differently depending on how we felt. I actually thought I wanted more lights but they told me I didn't need it. I appreciate they tried to keep the costs down. We've called them back recently to change the motion light on the back of our house. We already had a fixture there so they just needed to put in something different (~$250). Everything I was seeing at Home Depot got poor reviews and I was sick of changing lightbulbs. Daniel responded to my emails in a timely manner and always answered the phone when I called. But also, we were a few minutes late getting to the house and he was in the front fixing the lights (repositioning b/c we'd had landscaping done) they had installed a few years ago!! I was impressed with this."

"Kulick Landscaping did an excellent job designing and installing our front landscaping. They even went as far as to FaceTime with me since I was working while they were doing the install so I could give my opinion on some minor changes. I would definitely recommend them for any of your landscape needs."

"It turned out really well. They did a great job. Responsiveness was pretty good. They were on time and they called ahead, which was nice. What stood out to me was the ability to be able to get in contact with the owner. He is also a designer as well, a landscape designer. He gave a lot of good ideas for some projects that we might do in the future."

"Cityscapes is a excellent company to work with. We had a very labor intensive landscape job that need to be done in a part of our yard that had a wash out area. It was going to need several yards of dirt that had to be wheelbarrowed up a steep hill all done by hand, hill was to steep for machinery to be used. Also needed two skids of sod to be brought up the hill. Chris ( the owner) was there the whole time to make sure all went well. Give Chris a call 573-205-9324 for your landscaping work, you won't be disappointed."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Yes, it is possible to add too little mulch. Anything less than 1 inch will likely result in too little coverage around your plants, allowing weeds to grow through and minimizing the positive effects that a deeper bed of mulch would have, like maintaining proper soil moisture and insulating the ground.

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.

While both fall and spring are suitable times of the year for planting trees, fall is typically the better option. Soil stays warm long enough to allow tree roots to establish in fall before they go dormant, while spring might give way to intense summer heat before spring-planted trees have time to grow strong roots.

Yes, you can put topsoil over sand to encourage grass growth. The topsoil will help to improve water retention and promote grass roots’ development, making it a recommended step of the seeding process. Adding a layer of topsoil will provide additional nutrients to the sandy soil, helping the grass grow and remain healthy through many seasons.

In most cases, buying plants from a local greenhouse or nursery is well worth the investment, even though they tend to be a bit more expensive than those at a home improvement store. Employees at nurseries are usually well-versed in gardening and understand how the climate in your area affects different plants. They can help you make selections based on your skill level and time commitment to your landscaping, and they can provide detailed care instructions and advice to help keep your plants alive and diagnose and treat issues like pest infestation and illness.
