"Excellent work. We purchased natural cherry cabinets in shaker style, with the panels made of solid wood rather than veneer. That is more difficult work, as each panel has to be constructed from several planks. Moreover, the clear finish would leave any flaws more visible. Simply put, the doors are beautiful--flawless in both construction and finish. They are similar in quality to custom cherry furniture we own."

"The estimate and the people doing it was good. They knew what they were talking about and took their time. They said the work would start early February before they can start, which is fine its no rush. But we would appreciate if they could just give us a date. My wife has chased them down and they haven't gotten back to her. Just keep us in the loop, we shouldn't have to chase them down. We understand if the weather delayed or a set back. Standard door sizes aren’t one-size-fits-all, but there are common go-to dimensions. For exterior doors—like your front door—36 inches wide by 80 inches tall is typical, though you’ll see 30- or 32-inch widths too, especially in older homes. Interior doors vary more. Bedrooms and bathrooms often use 30- to 32-inch widths, and closet doors can be anything from slim singles to wide bi-folds. Height is usually 80 inches across the board; however, always measure your actual opening. “Standard” only works if it matches what’s already in place.

Residential exterior doors should swing inward. While this cuts into your living space and prevents you from putting furniture near the inside of your door, it also means that the hinges will only be accessible from the interior. Hinges that sit on the outside of your home leave your property far less secure, as someone looking to get in could simply unscrew them and remove your door. Additionally, inswing exterior doors will be operable even if you have snow or other obstructions outside.

You can often fit a new door slab into an old frame as long as the frame’s in decent shape. The frame needs to be solid, square, and free of warping or rot. The new door has to match the old one in width, height, and thickness, and the hinge and knob placements need to line up or be adjusted carefully. Sometimes one-way latches are installed very high on the gate to make it easier to open, although it’s only easier for tall people. Installing a two-way latch at the proper height is a good idea.

You might be able to turn a normal door into a fire-rated door, but you’re better off purchasing one that meets all NFPA 80 standards. If you want to DIY a normal door into a fire door, you’ll need a self-adhesive intumescent seal, metal hinges, fire-resistant glazing, and a self-closing device, but you’re always better off buying a certified fire door.
