"We replaced the windows in our 1933 home through the services of MadCity Windows. From the initial contact with their sales representative to final installation, the company provided top notch professional work. With the draft from the old windows and the cold of the glass, we are already saving on our energy bills. Our house had old, large windows, so they had to be custom made. As an industrial designer and interior designer, we find our windows to be of excellent quality."

First off, the salesman Russell was great.  Very knowledgeable and informed on all aspects of what he was doing.  I explained his was the first of three bids I was planning to get and he didn't get pushy.  He did still try to close the sale on our first meeting but that's his job.  He was also easy to contact and prompt to return calls.  After talking to him for a while you start to wonder why in the world is this guy selling windows?! (Not knocking window salesmen)  An interesting guy and a big part of the reason I chose Window World.

Next, the windows.  I'm not a home improvement type person, but they seem to me to be very good quality for the price and are a huge improvement over the old 1970's era wooden single pane windows I had.  I could immediately tell a huge difference in how they keep the wind and cold out.  Several of my friends in the construction industry were very impressed with the build and quality when I showed them.  Time will tell further, but based on what I see, and lots of research, they are a huge step above basic builder grade quality.

Last, the installation.  The windows arrived ahead of plan and installation was scheduled quick and easy.  They guys called when they were on the way and arrived on time.  Overall everything went well.  I did ask them to re caulk one of the windows as the bead was pretty ugly and got dirt in it.  They took care of it right away.  I later noticed one of the screens had a tear in it and they came back promptly and took care of it.  Based on my experience, I expect to get good service in the future if needed.

A few small problems.  One of the installers was standing on my front porch smoking.  I believe you should ask the customer first if that's OK.  I did politely ask him not to smoke.  I guess I should have also asked him not to leave cigarette butts in my driveway. When they took the windows off the truck, a bunch of broken glass fell off and was left on my driveway.  Per their paperwork, a normal amount of post construction clean up is the customer's responsibility but broken glass covering the width of my driveway is beyond normal post construction clean up.   I didn't notice that until a few hours later so I just cleaned it up myself but I did contact the project manager and let him know about those issues.  Another thing, as noted on their paperwork, they are not responsible for damage to shrubs or landscaping.   I pointed out a particular shrub to the installer and they said no problem, they could work around it, but it was stepped on and destroyed.

As I stated though, I consider these to be small problems and will be purchasing more windows from Window World in the future and would recommend them.

"Jim responded promptly to my order placed on Angie's List for the Remote Computer Tune Up & Repair Deal.  He cleaned up the computer remotely, which was running very slowly, and required frequent re-boots.  Computer is running much faster now.  Great service.  Would highly recommend.

Window Shutters questions, answered by experts

Not all windows are suitable for shutters, as certain styles can prevent them from functioning correctly. It's best to avoid installing shutters on bay windows, picture windows, dormer windows, and double-mulled windows. Shutters are better suited for large, full-size standard windows or French doors.

Additionally, consider the room's lighting needs. Since shutters effectively block light, they are an excellent choice for rooms where you want more darkness and privacy, such as a master bedroom or a main living room. For window types that are not ideal for functional shutters, some homeowners choose to install fixed (non-functional) shutters to maintain a consistent look across the home.

The most popular estate shutter brands include Hunter Douglas, Budget Blinds®, and Graber®. Hunter Douglas shutters cost $20 to $26 per square foot and include high-quality hardwood and faux wood options. Budget Blinds shutters cost $20 to $24 per square foot, depending on if you choose natural wood or another material. Depending on the material, Graber shutters range from $18 to $24 per square foot.

Estate shutters offer more energy efficiency, privacy, and light control than blinds. They provide better insulation against heat and cold, lowering your energy bills. They’re also sturdy, durable, and last much longer than blinds (up to 50 years or longer). They’re also low-maintenance and can add curb appeal to your home. The return on investment (ROI) for estate shutters is around 75%.

Plantation shutters cost an average of $2,990, making them one of the pricier shutter options. However, they offer a 75% return on your investment and are great options for boosting curb appeal and property value. Most people go for plantation shutters for their timeless, vintage look. They also provide the strongest light blocking and temperature control for your home.

Wood is the most classic shutter material. Common options include pine, cedar, or brasswood. MDF shutters are also a more affordable option that retains the timeless, classic look. Composite shutters, mainly vinyl and aluminum shutters, have also become more popular over the years. You may also find steel shutters, sometimes referred to as security shutters, used on the exterior. Shutters also come in various colors and finishes, adding another layer of design flexibility.
