30 years of experience

Nearly 30 years ago, my father, Greg Pfleiderer, began Pfleiderer and Sons Flooring. For over 20 years, I have had the pleasure of working with him. In 2015, my father retired, and I have continued his business in West-Central Missouri. We provide floor installation for carpet, vinyl, hardwood, and the recently-popular lock-together flooring. While I sub-contract with Integrity Floors in Clinton, MO, I am will to provide estimates and services outside of Integrity Floors, if requested.

Flooring Installation questions, answered by experts

Carpeting has a few benefits on stairs in addition to being a cost-effective floor covering. It absorbs sound, dampening footsteps. It also provides additional traction, which is especially important if you install linoleum floors, epoxy flooring, or any other floor covering that can become slippery if you’re wearing socks. Therefore, carpets can help prevent slips.

Decent carpet will last around 10 years on stairs. Some less durable carpets, like polyester, will only last five years on stairs. The ideal carpet, like wool or nylon, can last about 15 to 25 years. You’ll know when to replace it when it starts wearing down. You may have to replace it sooner if it's stained, whether due to water damage or pets.

A transition piece between carpet stairs and wood flooring isn't always necessary. A transition piece separates two types of flooring in between rooms and areas, like carpet and vinyl. Because the carpet on the stairs tucks into the seam, you can’t see the fringes, and there is no need to hide anything. However, you can use a stair cap if your stairs have a nose.

Yes, nylon carpets are suitable for homes with allergies due to their hypoallergenic properties. Nylon fibers are resistant to mold and mildew growth, minimizing allergen accumulation in the carpet. Additionally, nylon carpets are often treated to repel moisture and stains, further reducing the risk of allergens and promoting a healthier indoor environment for allergy sufferers.

Most DIYers can learn how to remove carpet although it’s time and labor-intensive. However, if you have glued-down carpet and are concerned about damaging the substrate below, it's best to call a professional carpet remover. Also, removing glue-down carpet is more work than dealing with wall-to-wall carpet because you have to get rid of all traces of the adhesive from your subfloor to prepare it for a new installation.
