"They did a great job, they cleaned and inspected both fireplaces as requested and gave a detailed inspection with pictures showing damage with a quote that was emailed 24 hours later. We have white carpets throughout our house and I was worried that they would be stained. I could not see any evidence of soot when the work was finished."

"I discovered the problems with the debris and the damper when I had gas logs installed. I called 7 chimney sweeps from Angie's List. I reached voicemail at five, was scheduled two weeks out for the 6th but Eric answered and said he could squeeze in a visit to give an estimate that day. He was on time, very courteous and informative. He gave me an estimate for everything except the few broken tiles that could not be seen. Eric made an appointment to come back within 5 days to do the work. He was willing to work around my schedule and showed up at 7:30am. His son, who was also very courteous and professional, helped him with the work. They carefully explained the possible consequences of leaving the tiles broken (a carbon monoxide leak into the half of the chimney housing the furnace pipe, and possibly into the house) and did not charge too much extra to repair the tiles. They left the house very neat, after having carefully covered the entire workspace. Later that night I ran into a problem with the pilot light on the gas fireplace. Ashes away had not installed the gas logs, but it was after hours and I had phone numbers for both Eric and his son, so I called both. Eric answered and his son called back within about a minute. Eric walked me through the problem with the pilot light and stayed on the phone until I had it working. I found Ashes Away to be very reasonably priced but I was much more impressed by their knowledge and professionalism. I know the devastation that can be caused by chimney fires and carbon monoxide leaks and would not want to choose a chimney sweep and repair person based on price alone. I would recommend Ashes Away to anyone."

"Technician showed up on time and was very friendly. He even plugged in the vacuum portion of the sweep outside so as to not create sound disturbances inside my home. In addition, he helped show me how to close a side vent on the fireplace that for the life of me I could not figure out how to close. Afterwards, he left the area cleaner than it was before, and now there are no more wood smells coming from my chimney/fireplace

Fireplace Cleaners questions, answered by experts

Knowing who to hire to install your fireplace is important when it comes to having a safe place to burn a fire in your home. The best person to contact for installing fireplaces is a mason or general contractor who has a National Fireplace Institute (NFI) specialist certification. If you’re installing wood paneling, then it’s a good idea to also find a pro who is Wood Energy Technology Transfer (WETT)-certified.

Both of these certifications show that your pro is well-equipped to install fireplaces and inspect your home for the utmost safety.

Yes, you can limewash surfaces other than brick. Plaster, stone, stucco, and concrete can all also be limewashed. Any porous surface that will absorb the wash is a good candidate for limewash, although it won’t help much with waterproofing. If you choose to limewash over paint, you’ll need to prep before applying it to avoid a powdery, chalky finish. Shiny surfaces like metal or glass can’t absorb limewash, so it’s not suited for these.

Cracked panels, worn-out seals, faulty dampers, and firebrick damage often need professional attention.

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

You can turn a red brick white through a process called whitewashing. Whitewash isn’t a stain but rather is made from water and white latex paint. Adding more water to the mix will make the solution look lighter when applied, and adding more paint will make it look more white.
