Small jobs welcome

"We unfortunately had a pipe burst during the extreme low temperatures at the end of January, and essentially had to have most of our dining room and living room dismantled and put back together. The job entailed removal of cabinets/ sink/countertops, removal of molded/ wet drywall, installation of proper insulation per permitting requirements, installation of drywall, painting, and resetting everything back in place. (We also added in a tile backsplash as well). Brian took care of the project from start to finish answering questions along the way, and adding on odd jobs as the project required. My husband and I work in property Management and encounter a lot of vendors... what was most impressive about Brian is his attention to detail, how well he kept the site even while working, his clean-up, and dependability. I was recently talking to one of our neighbors who had a pipe burst on the same day as ours, and their construction had not even began by the time ours was nearing the end. That is because whenever Brian said he would come, he did... he worked efficiently through the project so that a construction that some general contractors would have stretched out 3 months, he completed in 2 weeks which included the permit process. I would definitely recommend Hughes to anyone looking for general contracting work. Their excellent customer service, professionalism, presentation, and reliability all made a stressful time go as smooth as possible."

"We used CK Tile & Stone.  They did a wonderful job and went above and beyond in putting things back and even fixing some minor items (like hanging closet doors straight, and replacing hoses on the toilet.)  Chris was great to work with, as well as, his workman.

"No complaints.  These guys were very professional from beginning to end.  They verified that the carpet was what we ordered and then worked to get the job done.  It was done in a very short period of time and they cleaned up everything after they finished.  I would recommend this company.  Very professional and efficient."

"We had a great experience with Justin and his crew. Initially we contacted him to replace some 65yr old windows, and he was the only contractor to bring to our attention that we had hail damage on the window wraps, siding, gutters, and roof. His experience really helped us thru the insurance claim process and it ended up being a huge cost savings for us. We were so impressed with his customer service, we decided to have him convert our 1-season porch into a 3-season porch, install tile flooring, replace some doors, and paint the interior and exterior of our home. He listened to our ideas, gave us options and suggestions, and helped create solutions for all of the projects. He's like a fiduciary for home improvement and we relied on his expertise to make some great choices to improve our home."

"One structure in the form of a arbor with a gate completed our fence.
The other structure a small deck outside of the lower sliding glass doors, with a pergola added,
gives a quiet shady respite to the yard.
We also had Hal design and build a fountain feature added to the garden area itself.  Which gives a soft
and flowing water sound near the small deck.
The work overall is outstanding with a very finished look.  It was also accomplished as per estimate of
time and cost.  They were very considerate to make the work space neat and clean each day at finish
       time.

We would "highly" recommend these contractors to anyone wanting this type of excellent yard work done.

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Your floors should be completely level for tile, otherwise you risk damaging the tiles in the future. When there are even small gaps or hills in the subfloor beneath the tile, this puts more pressure on the tile when you walk around on the floor. With repeated traffic, the tiles are at risk of cracking, and you’ll have to deal with tile repairs sooner than if the floor was completely level.

You can technically install tile over tile, but we don’t suggest it. Installing tile over any surface that isn’t a completely flat and prepared subfloor will result in a shoddy overall job, uneven flooring, tiles that don’t adhere, extra weight, gaps, cracks, and room for moisture and dirt to enter. For the best results, only install new tile on a flat, sanded surface like subflooring or concrete that is prepared for tile.

If you have asbestos tile and would rather tile over it than remove it, or if your existing tile is completely flat and bonded tightly to the floor, you may be able to tile over existing tile. But experts recommend thinking twice before you do.

The cost to install porcelain tile is about $1,930 on average. Porcelain tile prices range from $880 to $3,000 or more. The average cost tends to be higher than ceramic tile because porcelain tile is very durable. Porcelain tile rating also factors into the material cost. Tile ratings are as follows:

  • Grade 0: Walls only

  • Grade 1: Walls and light traffic floors

  • Grade 2: Rooms with light traffic, but not kitchens or hallways

  • Grade 3: Kitchens, hallways, and entryways

  • Grade 4: Any area, interior or exterior

  • Grade 5: Highest durability good for any area, interior or exterior

Replacing tile flooring can take a few days for a pro, but larger rooms will need more time. It takes eight to 12 hours for a tiling pro to remove old grout and tiles across 100 square feet. Then, it will take about four hours to prep the subfloor for tiles and another eight to 10 hours for a pro to install new tiles. Your tiling project may take up to a week, depending on the size of the room.

Like glass tiles, you will not need to seal most porcelain tiles, particularly if the porcelain is already glazed. It depends on quality. Porcelain is very water resistant, but it is not 100% waterproof. To avoid staining, some homeowners use a penetrating sealer. It is also a good idea to seal your grout. Unless you use epoxy grout, grout is very porous and can harbor bacteria, mold, and mildew.
