Established in 1995. Groundworks is a family owned and operated landscaping contractor, based in Hastings, Minnesota, with a reputation for beautiful, long-lasting landscapes and hardscapes.

"Let me start this by saying that I'm a detail oriented guy. I work in the mechanical trades, and I'm very familiar with the practices used by contractors. Both good and bad. With that in mind, I needed to hire someone to redo a very poor landscaping job that I inherited. I looked at a small handful of companies that I knew to have a good reputation. Groundworks is a family operated business. I met initially with Gary, who owns it along with his wife. He provided an initial estimate, and was clear about what would be done. He uses his own employees, no sub-contractors or temporary help. In fact, his son Chris was the crew leader on my project. With more than 20 years of experience, I was in good hands with Chris. The scope of the project was initially smaller than the end result due to the hidden issues that were uncovered when work got under way. Gary and Chris worked with me to correct those problems at a price that was more than fair given the time and effort involved. His crew was polite and wasted no time sitting around despite the brutally hot weather. The end result was beautiful. Do yourself a favor and give them an opportunity to provide an estimate. White vinegar or baking soda can remove the crusty white deposits that minerals leave behind. A paper towel soaked in vinegar and wrapped around your faucet can effectively dissolve scale, but can be corrosive to some materials like brushed nickel if left on too long. For materials that can’t withstand vinegar, a paste of baking soda and water applied with a toothbrush can gently scrub away scale deposits.

PVC is best for drain or waste lines, but it isn’t a great choice for water supply lines, which tend to be highly pressurized. PVC is also not suitable for hot water lines. Instead, you’ll commonly see PVC for a toilet drain line or for plumbing vents to prevent airlocks, which can prevent water from flowing out of faucets.

To bleed air from the pipes, start by turning off the main water supply. Then, starting with the faucet that’s closest to the water valve, open each of your faucets halfway, making sure to open both hot and cold options if they’re separate. This allows the air to escape the pipes. Once all faucets are open, turn your water supply back on and let the water run for 10 to 15 minutes until the faucets stop sputtering.

Depending on the severity of the freeze and the method used, thawing frozen underground pipes can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Applying heat directly to the pipe using heat tape, infrared lamps, or hot water jetting can speed up the process. However, patience and careful monitoring are key to avoiding pipe damage.
