"It went wonderfully. We worked well together on the designs. I did request a few extras, but in the end it cost less than the fired contractor was charging for severely sub-par work, which I had been coerced into pre-paying for. Dmitry knew I was in a world of financial hurt over the situation, so he gave me a really good deal. His price included all wood and hardware, except for the pulls. The finished products exceeded my expectations."

"We feel VERY fortunate to have found Manuel. We had a leather sofa and loveseat which needed to be reupholstered and Manuel did an absolutely beautiful job. From helping us select the leather to delivering the final product, he was professional and easy to work with. He took a couple of pretty worn out pieces and made them better than new. His work is impeccable and he is so nice to work with. He does amazing work and we will use him again if we have another project, and we put him first on the list of upholsterers in the Twin Cities. Anyone with an upholstery job should be using Manuel without question."

"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

"I had Twin Cities Upholstery reupholster a rocker that I inherited this fall. They did an amazing job! I was happy with the service, price, selection of fabrics, quality of the work, etc. I even had some scheduling difficulties with pick-up and she got there early just for me. I have some other similar work that i need done, and I plan to use them again!"

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Carpentry is a skilled trade and requires many years of experience to acquire the skills necessary to do the job efficiently and correctly. Because every home requires a carpenter at some stage of the building process, carpenters are typically in high demand. The higher the skill level, the higher the hourly rate the carpenter can charge.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.

If you’re just replacing a few broken or damaged joists, you can expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $300 per joist. However, a complete installation for a home or room will take into account the cost of labor, which ranges from $25 to $40 per hour. Floor joist installation for an entire room, for example, can cost between $5,000 and $10,000, depending on the room's size and the materials used.

Landscape timbers can last 10 to 20 years in the ground when installed correctly. Pressure-treated timbers will last longer than non-treated ones, as pressure treatment makes the wood more rot-resistant. Wood exposed to high moisture levels or extreme temperature and weather fluctuations may not last as long as wood in drier areas with more consistent weather.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.
