"Dennis had previously painted the exterior of our home, and we knew we wanted him back when these two small projects in our home arose.

Dennis and his crew redid the drywall and repainted the ceiling in our office after a bath tub seal cracked.  This involved cutting out the drywall around a ceiling fixture and replacing it.  After they had finished, the repair was perfectly blended into the texture of the ceiling.  Really nicely done.

The second part of the job involved refinishing the 90 year old wooden sills in our living room.  The never-painted sills are beautiful hardwood, but over time (and in one case, the former owner had allowed some weather damage to occur) they had lost their finish and looked bad.

This is the kind of craftsmanship project that Dennis just seems dedicated to doing really well.  The wood of the sills was so hard and so completely cured, it was a challenge to get the new stain and poly-coat to properly take; Dennis came over four times to apply extra coats/top coats.  The result is wood with a deeply burnished, beautifully silkily finished texture.

The final result looked a lot better than I had expected--more like the care a homeowner would take on their own home if they really knew how to apply the products.  All the sills are beautiful now and match perfectly, this was NOT the case when Dennis started working on the job.

Dennis is so dedicated, he does have one area of weakness: when he makes his bids, he has a tendency to underestimate the work hours necessary.  This is largely owing to his willingness to "go the extra mile" rather than simply slap up paint and presume the homeowner won't notice that he's ignored some complicating factor.  By the time he had applied the third coat of sealer, I was satisfied--but Dennis didn't like how the product was taking on the extremely dense wood and scheduled an extra visit to do the extra coat without my asking for it.  And he was right--that last coat made all the difference in really making the sills look beautiful and "pop" (in a good way!).

I love working with Dennis--wish I could find repair people/craftsmen like him in all the service areas I need!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

For the longest-lasting exterior paint, consider acrylic or enamel (oil-based) paints. Acrylic paints, including acrylic latex and acrylic enamel, are known for withstanding harsh weather and sun exposure. Enamel-based paints are also one of the most durable options available. While latex paint is common, it typically has a shorter lifespan than acrylic or oil-based options. The paint's finish also affects its durability; a higher gloss finish is generally more durable. For resistance to moisture and cracking, matte and satin finishes can be effective, while a high-gloss acrylic or oil-based paint offers a combination of maximum longevity and durability.

Applying a sealer or topcoat after staining wood is highly recommended, though not always strictly required. A sealer protects the wood from moisture, UV rays, and weather-related issues, which is especially important for outdoor surfaces like decks and fences. It also enhances the stain's durability, prevents fading over time, and gives the wood a cleaner, more professional-looking finish. For some indoor applications, a sealer may not be necessary, depending on the type of stain used and the level of protection needed. It's always best to check the stain manufacturer's recommendations and consider the wood's intended use and exposure when deciding whether to apply a sealer.

For homes in areas with extreme weather, high heat, or intense sun exposure, high-quality acrylic paint is the best option. Acrylic paint is durable, resistant to both heat and cold, and provides a protective barrier with excellent UV resistance. For best results, look for acrylics that contain natural earth pigments, which are better suited for resisting sun damage. While oil-based paint is also durable, it can be prone to fading in high heat and can become too viscous to apply easily in cold temperatures. Additionally, choosing a neutral or light color like gray, beige, or white can help, as these colors absorb less heat than darker shades.

Limewash and whitewash do not harm surfaces if you apply them correctly. Use on non-suitable surfaces can cause issues. For instance, applying limewash or whitewash to surfaces with existing sealants or incompatible materials may lead to poor adhesion or flaking. Also, harsh cleaning agents on limewashed or whitewashed surfaces can damage the finish. Proper preparation, application, and maintenance ensure that limewash and whitewash do not harm surfaces.

Yes, you must thoroughly clean your deck before staining. If you don't, dirt, debris, grease, and mildew can get trapped between the wood and the new stain. This not only looks unsightly but also prevents the stain from penetrating the wood properly, reducing its ability to protect the deck from weather and UV rays. As a result, the stain won't last as long or look as good. Any existing mold or mildew left untreated can continue to grow beneath the new stain, potentially leading to wood rot and structural damage. Always wait at least 48 hours after cleaning for the wood to dry completely before applying stain.
