"The best! Had a follow up appointment with Groundworks after the installation of foundation support posts in 2021 - the posts were still perfectly perpendicular and nothing moved or shifted at all. Very impressed with the service, Ben was thorough and he was on time, very professional, polite and made sure to answer all my questions. He gave me a quote for future work that needs to be done, wasn’t pushy, didn’t lie, just presented the facts, and showed me what he was talking about and why it needed to be completed. He presented several options that could fit with our budget. Couldn’t ask for more! Highly recommend!!"

"When I requested bids for replacing my old timber retaining wall for my wife's garden, I received 4 bids. Up North was neither the lowest bid or the highest bid. However, it was the most detailed bid, and the competing bids weren't even close to the detail that i received from Bryce. I am a retired accountant/capital investment analyst, so that was very important to me in my decision. I knew exactly what I was getting if I went with Bryce. When it comes to performance, Bryce and his crew were excellent! Hard-working, skilled, and on time, every day! The garden wall is beautiful! My wife loves it! Then when the wall itself was completed, they seeded and made the surrounding area better than it was before! What more can I say? Up North Hardscapes is "top shelf" in every respect! "The techs did a great job, and once I alerted them to my flower beds directly in front of the porch to be lifted, were very careful not to damage my emerging hostas. I'd definitely recommend Acculevel and already have to my sister for her patio/parking spot."

"I highly recommend Lenâ s company Trilite. The process of replacing my brick with stone veneer went so smoothly. Since Trilite was the manufacturer and the installer in my project, I was able to choose from a myriad of stone and colors. The quality and workmanship of the masons was above and beyond what I expected. The stone is beautiful and it was all done in a timely manner and at a fair price. For stone veneer this is the place!!"

Masonry FAQs, answered by experts

Granite is the strongest commercially available stone houses are built from. It’s also more commonly available, which means transport costs aren’t as high because a granite quarry isn’t too far from a build site. Limestone and sandstone are popular materials as well, but they aren’t as strong or weather-resistant as granite.

Yes, it is usually possible to repair a damaged brick mailbox. A professional brick mason or masonry contractor can perform the repairs. They can assess the damage, provide an estimate, and help you determine if the repair is worthwhile based on the mailbox's value and the extent of the damage. The repair process may involve sourcing replacement bricks and mortar. Damaged bricks can be cut out and replaced, or the mortar joints can be cut out and retucked. It's important to note that the new mortar may differ in color from the original. If the mailbox insert itself is damaged, it can typically be cut out and replaced as well. If your brick mailbox has been completely destroyed, you should check with your local building code enforcement office before rebuilding, as some areas do not allow brick mailboxes due to the potential hazard they pose to drivers.

A traditional German schmear uses mortar, making it unsuitable for adherence to painted surfaces. Professionals recommend removing any existing paint before applying mortar. However, you can rough up the painted surface and clean it to test if the mortar will stick. Remember that the underlying paint's texture and color may affect the schmear's final appearance—so starting with a bare brick wall will ensure the ideal finish.

Yes, you can use a mixture of 1 tablespoon of bleach and a gallon of warm water to clean stubborn stains from brick. Do not use bleach without diluting it in water. Undiluted bleach may cause discoloration. You can use either Oxygen bleach such as OxiClean or chlorine bleach. Always wear protective gloves and eye protection when handling bleach.

When painting brick, each application method has distinct advantages and disadvantages. Spraying is significantly faster but may not penetrate deeply beyond the surface layer. Rolling is effective for working paint into the brick's texture but can be less effective on mortar joints. If you opt for a roller, choose a thick nap of at least a half-inch to ensure paint gets into all the crevices for even coverage. Using a brush is generally not recommended as it is very time-consuming and provides poor surface penetration. Ultimately, a combination of spraying followed by back-rolling is often the best strategy for a durable and even finish.
