We hold on to one very important word here at Schleifer’s WoodWorks LLC… Integrity. This company is built on it. When we started out on the idea of building “another construction company” we knew we had to be different. Together, Corey and his team have 30+ years in construction and a wealth of knowledge in over 20 trades and specialties. With all of our history living, working, and loving these Twin Cities, we needed to bring out the best in our fields. One of the biggest problems in construction today is the lack of attention to the customer… YOU! We take jobs one by one to ensure we get it done right, the first time. We pride ourselves on our experience and aim to bring “the craft” back to craftsmanship. Let’s get connected.

"Carter was very professional and did a fantastic job on my new siding that he replaced on my house. He also did a great job updating my maintenance-free deck and installing the beautiful new aluminum maintenance free railings. Carter shows up when he says he will be there and worked hard to Finnish my projects in a timely manner. He’s a very talented carpenter and I will definitely hire him again on future home improvement projects."

"Everything went as expected. Kraig replaced rotting deck boards (about 52). He was professional and prompt. He kept me updated on when he would arrive and the expected length of the job. I will most definitely contact 651-Handyman for my next project!"

"We found John Roth's business highly rated on Angie's list so decided to give him a try.  I would say the service provided was efficient, neat and the windows are not just clean, they sparkle.  He will also do power washing, gutter cleaning, roof raking and ice dam removal.  After using a un-reliable provider for many years, I am very happy to know they are people in this business that care about being outstanding rather than just good or excellent.

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The most likely causes of a deck leaning to one side are damaged deck posts, soil erosion, and inadequate deck footings. If you’re not sure about the exact cause, the best option is to call a contractor who can build a deck to inspect the damage and recommend the best way forward.

It’s important to make sure the wood on a new deck is properly seasoned. Seasoning a deck is simple: Once you build it (or have a pro do so), just leave it alone so it can acclimate to the environment. If you don’t give the deck proper seasoning time before staining, the stain can lock in any lingering moisture and cause mold, rot, and other moisture issues down the road. Give the wood at least four to eight weeks to season before you stain.

The choice between Trex, a brand of composite decking, and PVC decking depends on your priorities regarding budget, appearance, and environmental impact. Both materials are durable and resistant to moisture and insects. Trex is often considered more eco-friendly because it contains recycled wood and plastic and is 25% recyclable, while PVC is fully synthetic and harder to recycle. Aesthetically, Trex is designed to look more like real wood, whereas PVC often has a glossier, more plastic-like finish. In terms of cost, Trex is typically less expensive than PVC.

Composite decking requires a solid foundation or substructure for support. This base is typically a frame composed of posts, beams, joists, and footings. The frame can be built from various materials, such as composite, plastic, timber, or metal, depending on your budget, deck type, and environmental conditions. For maximum stability, a professional deck builder may recommend installing this frame on top of a solid concrete base. It is best to discuss the most suitable substructure design and materials for your specific project with a professional.

A deck that isn’t attached to a house is called a floating or freestanding deck. These standalone decks are built near ground level, so they usually don’t need deck stairs. Some don’t even require permits. Generally speaking, building a floating deck is faster and more DIY-friendly than constructing one that’s connected to your home.
