"I first googled handyman in Marcell a few years ago and Handyman Pete appeared. I called and he answered personally and came over that day to introduce himself. From that day forward he has become a friend who we completely trust entering our cabin to do any project I throw at him. We work together as a team communicating by phone or text even sending photos along the way of ideas and projects in process and completion. He has such great ideas to share and he’s open minded to all mine. We are a great team!!! He’s so easy going and fun to work with and his pricing can’t be beat. We plan on having him replace our existing roof to metal next. Doubling the insulation in your home also doubles the R-value of said insulation. In other words, by adding more insulation, you can reduce the heat loss by half. Most homes benefit from increasing insulation. Older homes, in particular tend to have less insulation as is, so doubling your insulation could drastically reduce your energy bills, keep your home more comfortable, and take the strain off your HVAC system.

Your house may be cold even if the heat is on because of bad insulation, gaps in doors, small holes pulling hot air from the home, or excess humidity. The heater itself might be malfunctioning. For this problem, you’d need to talk to an HVAC pro. If you have a gas heating system (most do) this should be considered an urgent job as natural gas could be leaking in your home.

You can insulate an existing garage door. But while it’s a cost-effective option upfront, it may not perform as well as a garage door that comes with insulation. If you live in a colder climate—or if you plan on working in your garage and need a new door—you should purchase one with existing insulation for better efficiency. 

There are two places where you should not place foam insulation: around electrical boxes or near lightboxes. The foam insulation could get inside the electrical boxes and damage the wiring. Spraying foam too close to a lightbox creates a potential fire hazard; it could also cause damage to the light.

The lifespan of cellulose insulation is 20 to 30 years, on average. That said, it’s important to start checking your insulation after year 10 to check for degradation, mold, mildew, and other potential problems. Every 10 years, you should also confirm your home’s insulation is in line with updated local building codes.
