Customers say: True professional

"We really appreciated Amy's knowledge of interior design and staging. She actually helped us look at a home we have for sale to give us ideas of how to make it more appealing to buyers--she suggested simple "fixes" --painting, rearranging furniture and adding new light bulbs to change the feeling of the home. The changes were easy and look fantastic! We also had Amy come to our current house to help us decide on some furniture and layouts for several rooms. She listened to our ideas and thoughts and incorporated our busy family of five (with three young boys) into her ideas. Amy's expertise will help make our house a home."

"Randy’s was an excellent company to work with. Our technician was thorough and took the time to talk through different options. We initially had them out for a few outlet installations but ended up having outdoor lights replaced in the back and front yard lights fixed."

"Everything turned out fine. When it first arrived, it was damaged in the shipping. It took them quite a while to get something back to us, or even to call me back when I wrote to them. But then, once they got the ball rolling, it went very quickly. It took them probably about a month to even get back to me. The price was very good. Once somebody actually did speak with me, they were very responsive. They were pretty professional when I spoke to them. I just think that they were light on manpower."

".Due to a medical challenge that developed in our family in
2013, I found myself needing to remodel my existing home by expanding a small
bedroom on the first floor, adding a and frac34; bath to it and making the new room
wheelchair accessible. I had previously had a less pressing and smaller remodel
job done the year before – taking out a wall between two rooms – and had
contracted with Fair and Square Remodeling for that initial job on the
recommendation of a friend. The first project was a real breeze with no major
problems, cost exactly as quoted, and finished on time. So when the necessity
of the new project became evident, I contacted Mike Otto, owner of Fair and
Square Remodeling, to come out and talk with me about the new project.

I had done a lot of thinking about what I wanted and how I
thought the new space ought to be organized. I’m pretty self-sufficient and the
type who knows what she wants. Mike is a great listener and extremely
respectful of his client’s wishes – the friend who made the original recommendation
described Mike as rather a Disney-type: he’s seriously dedicated to making your
dreams come true. And that’s exactly the attitude I have experienced both times
I have used Fair and Square Remodeling.

I am retired, so I made it very clear during our initial
discussion about my limitations on budget as well as the critical need for
various features that I wanted to include. There was also an urgency to the
project – we talked about it all. One of the things I appreciate most about
Mike Otto besides his genuine interest in helping me get what I want and need,
is his absolute honesty. He forewarned me up front that larger projects
inherently carry the risk of problems – the more people involved, the more
opportunities for delays or problems. But, as with the first project we did
together, Mike promised that constant communication and immediate
responsiveness to my concerns as well as 100% customer satisfaction would be
what I could count on from him. That’s exactly what I got. In both projects.

The sub-contractor services arranged by Fair and Square were
inclusive. The first major delay was getting the architectural drawings done
and finalized. That delay was a function of the architect’s already scheduled
vacation time and commitment to other projects precisely at my time of need. I
am aware from emails from the architect that Mike Otto kept pressure on this
sub-contractor to keep the project on track with regard to time. Once the plans
were finalized and I authorized the project, a meeting was scheduled with all
the sub-contractors to come to my home for a walk-through and a meeting with
me. I cannot tell you how high a value I placed on this meeting and my ability
to talk personally with each of these people. I was afforded the opportunity to
talk about concerns and ask questions for which I was still seeking answers with
each of these folks and had their undivided attention during their time with
me: electrician, framing and finishing carpenters, foundation and excavation,
insulation, painter, roofer, siding specialist, plumber, and project manager.
At the end of the meeting, I had every single concern allayed and knew that
each of them was aware of the incidentals that were important to me. As a
woman, I was particularly impressed of the respect I was shown and not talked
down to.

The ball got rolling quickly. We did encounter a few other
delays, all out of the control of Fair and Square. However, I was given a daily
update as each of those delays was resolved. I honestly don’t know that Fair
and Square could have done any more than they did to remedy those situations. Communication
with me was daily from the project manager, and Mike Otto and I exchanged
emails multiple times weekly – plus he stopped weekly at my home once work
started to keep personal tabs on the project’s progress and ensure my
satisfaction. The personal touch was not lost on me. That appears to be Fair
and Square’s MO.

Several of the sub-contractors on my second project I had
asked for specifically because of the superb job they had done for me on the first
project. Loren Woltroff of LL Construction Company was the finishing carpenter.
Loren is more than a carpenter; he is an artisan. His work truly is a work of
art, and he is both a problem solver and a perfectionist – nothing less than
perfect will do. Loren can accomplish more in a day than almost anyone I know. He
is welcome in my home as family - he cares that much. The other person I asked
for by name was Mike Magnuson, the drywall and painting specialist of Mand M
Painting and Drywall. Mike is another artisan and perfectionist in his work.
Both of these men never left my home each day on both projects without cleaning
the work area up as much as it possibly could be cleaned – including vacuuming.
I commented about that during the first project and they gave me this telling
response: “It’s your HOME, Betty.” Mike is also welcome as family. Their
signature quality work is everywhere in the rooms they have created for me.

New sub-contractors on this year’s project also made similar
impressions on me with their superb work ethic, attention to detail and my
satisfaction, and the exceptional quality of their work. Dan McCarthy of Arborgate
Horticultural Landscaping went to extraordinary lengths to dig and pour the new
foundation while preserving my yard and gardens. Dan laid plywood down to
prevent his bobcats from tearing up my lawn while digging the foundation hole
and transporting the dirt out. Rather than having a cement truck drive onto my
yard and destroy the sod when the ground was soft in early spring, Dan used the
same plywood pathways to bring bobcat buckets full of cement from the truck
parked on the street to pour the remodel’s foundation walls. I take great pride
in my yard and gardens, so Dan’s proactive and protective approach was very
much appreciated by me. Frank Countryman of Countryman Electric was another
incredible contributor to my project. His advice on lighting to meet needs, and
his thoughtfulness in creating solutions I never even anticipated exceeded my
expectations for handicapped accessible controls. Insulation for the new room
was provided by Arne Olson of Houle, Insulation, Inc. Arne and his crew also
provided superior service with minimal disruption to my home and family’s life.
The biggest recommendation I can make for any of these people is that I would
INSIST they be the ones working on any future project that I might have which
would require the services they provide.

Although my second project did not get finished by the original
estimated date due to delays beyond the control of Fair and Square, the project
came in on budget. Mike Otto and his team did make my dream come true. In fact,
the reality they provided exceeded my original dream.

While problems will arise on any project, what has sold me
on Fair and Square is the honest and straightforward way they acknowledge any
problem and resolve it. I can honestly say that there was no challenge or
problem that wasn’t remedied to my satisfaction and in a timely manner. If I

Lighting questions, answered by experts

Installations include new light fixtures, upgraded panels, fixed outlets, and tracked wiring continuity.

The average cost to install outdoor or landscape lighting is around $4,000, with most projects ranging from $2,000 to $6,000. The total cost can vary widely depending on several factors, including the number of fixtures, design complexity, and the type and quality of the lights used, such as wall sconces, pathway lights, or lamp posts. Other factors that influence the price are the square footage of the area being lit, the amount of electrical work needed, any required excavation or trenching, and local permitting costs. For specific types, you might pay around $100 for pathway or string lighting and up to $700 for lamp post lighting.

Simple repairs like replacing bulbs can be DIY projects, but professionals should handle significant electrical repairs to ensure safety and compliance with electrical standards.

If your lights are shorting out during rain storms or other winter events, you should probably replace them. These shorts indicate electrical issues that could cause serious hazards. Look for outdoor-rated lights with connectors made for rainy conditions to replace them. But if your Christmas lights are new and you want further protection, you can find weatherproof covers to add to the male-end connectors of your Christmas light strings. These can minimize the risk of shorts.

Yes, outdoor lights and receptacles should be on a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) for safety. The outdoors is considered a wet location where GFCI protection is generally required. A GFCI enhances safety by automatically tripping and shutting off the circuit if it detects an imbalance, which protects against electrocution and reduces the risk of an electrical fire. While it is the safest approach for all outdoor electrical components, specific requirements can vary depending on the type of light (e.g., pool lights), its location, and local electrical codes. For guidance tailored to your specific situation, it's best to consult a professional electrician.
