All work that I do for others I do to the standard of how I would do it in my house. I’m currently in the handicap remodeling industry where I do everything including a lot of painting.

We hold on to one very important word here at Schleifer’s WoodWorks LLC… Integrity. This company is built on it. When we started out on the idea of building “another construction company” we knew we had to be different. Together, Corey and his team have 30+ years in construction and a wealth of knowledge in over 20 trades and specialties. With all of our history living, working, and loving these Twin Cities, we needed to bring out the best in our fields. One of the biggest problems in construction today is the lack of attention to the customer… YOU! We take jobs one by one to ensure we get it done right, the first time. We pride ourselves on our experience and aim to bring “the craft” back to craftsmanship. Let’s get connected.

"The only thing I was dissappointed in was that the deck has a rough finish, but I suspect that was due to the previous sealing that was done by someone who wasn't experienced (family friend).  This guy said they could buff it next time, so that's OK.
They were very responsive to a spot that appeared to not have taken the stain as well as the rest of the deck surface; they came back right away and resolved that."

"They just finished last week. We got it a couple of months ago, but they actually did the work last week because we had storm damage happen that pushed everything back for a while so we could get all our ducks in a row. We basically put out for a bid and they’re the one we took. They worked around us. There was 5 people that came out to complete the work. They were nice, polite and they put up with us. On a scale of 1 to 10 they left their space a 9, but only because they didn’t have to fully clean up because there were more workers coming after them with actual stuff to do to clean up."

"Custom Renovations did a great job on my deck cleaning and staining project. Company owner, Ricardo, contacted me quickly after my search on Home Advisor, and then visited my house on my schedule to inspect the deck, offer suggestions, explain how they do a deck project and write a proposal on the spot. The price was fair for a two-day (over three) job. Once we had a window of agreeable weather, the crew got right to the job, and worked as long as it took to finish while the weather cooperated. The cleaning and sanding work prior to staining was particularly impressive and made the deck look great. The crew was polite, maintained a clean work site, did a nice job of protecting adjacent plants, and left the area very clean. Highly recommend!"

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.

The best way to clean your decking is to clear debris from the gaps between the boards, sweep the surface, rinse it, apply cleaner, rinse again, and let it dry fully. A homemade deck cleaner made of two gallons of warm water and 1/2 cup vinegar is a simple cleaning solution for both wood and composite decking. You can sprinkle baking soda on any spots with mold or mildew, then scrub the area and rinse clean.

Many people say the best composite decking is Trex, TimberTech, or Fiberon. These brands have formulated composite deck boards to withstand the elements and hold up over time. Each offers a range of product lines varying in durability, price, and appearance. Compare their different composite decking offers for cost, looks, and features before deciding on a product.

As with patios, there are many types of deck choices to choose from to add personalization to your home. Some common deck options include:

  • Attached decks are anchored to the home and include simple ground-level options or multi-level structures with stairways and separate landings.

  • Detached island decks are not attached to the home; they’re a freestanding structure in the yard.

  • Wraparound decks connect the back of the house with at least one other side and often are built with railings for safety.

  • Multi-level decks connect your deck through varying levels of elevation, featuring landings that are attached to stairs.

While eco-friendly decking, also called composite decking, is a win for the environment because it consists of recycled materials, it has trade-offs. These sustainable options often come with steeper price tags, lack natural wood's warm look, and can become uncomfortably hot under full sun. Some composite materials can also become slick when wet, posing a potential hazard.
