"I had Nathan quote a job for cabin under 600 sq ft. It was gutted to the studs inside with all new framing and completely open for them to work. He quoted 4,700 for the complete job, rough in and finish trim, simple cabin nothing special outlets lights and water heater etc nothing fancy at all. He went there to rough it in (600 sq feet cabin) they billed 48 hours to rough it in totaling $5,772 for just 1/2 the job. I remodel cabins for a living and this is 1 day job for 2 guys (have done 15 or so to date). They were apparently there for 48 hours. AFTER they did the work they billed me for just 1/2 the job for $5,772.00. I immediately called and asked what was going on and he said sorry that’s what it is and it will be another $2,615 to come finish it once the interior was done. So he quoted $4700 and tried to charge me $8,387.00. I had multiple quotes ranging from 4500-5700 from multiple electricians so his quote was accurate he just decided to try and take advantage of me and charge double AFTER the work was complete. He didn’t mention anything to me before about it costing more. STAY AWAY FROM THESE CROOKS! I know having to get a lawyer involved to get this matter settled. Complete Crooks! I have all the documents and emails to prove it."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

When maintained properly, a whole-house generator can last up to 20 years. Costs to maintain and repair generators vary by location and type of generator, but you can expect to pay about $150 to $300 per year for annual generator maintenance checks. An experienced generator service technician will inspect your generator’s engine filter, starting mechanism, fuel, lubrication, and coolant levels to keep your generator in good working condition for as long as possible.

A 10,000-watt generator can run a small to mid-sized central AC unit (typically up to 3 tons or 36,000 BTU) along with a few other appliances. However, larger AC units or additional loads will require a bigger generator. Consult a local generator installer to ensure you add the correct size generator to your home.

Potential benefits of using a natural gas generator include reducing your carbon footprint, lower likelihood of carbon monoxide exposure, budget-friendly operating costs, and low-maintenance, continuous fuel supply. Some possible drawbacks, though, include higher initial installation costs, dependency on a natural gas supply, and installation complexity. Keep in mind that pros and cons will vary based on the type and brand of natural gas generator.

A home that is 2,500 square feet will likely need a 20kW to 25kW generator. Consult your local generator installer to confirm the generator size needed to power your home before purchasing a new one. Be sure to consider how much power your necessary devices need to run.
