To remove painted-over hinges for replacement or paint removal, you should use a utility knife to score around the edges of the hinges gently. Professional products specifically designed for hardwood may be a better choice for large or stubborn paint spots.

You can start with a wallpaper steamer and steam it off or add laundry detergent to water and let it soak into the adhesive.
