We are a full service electrical contractor, commercial, residential, remodels,service upgrades,hot tub/ spas,swimming pools. We do do sub contracting,experience in the cell phone industry( +24v -48 v systems) shelter services, equipment installs, battery removal or swap outs of battery stacks.

"I typically don’t write reviews, but after the service we received from Rayco, I felt the need to share. If you are looking to hire an experienced electrician look no further! I would hire this company 100 times over! The service from start to finish was top notch! The gentleman, Ray, that we worked with was so honest, even telling us where we could save money and provided ideas. We had him do our entire house with recessed lighting, put new lighting in bathrooms, add outlets to our entire unfinished basement, the list goes on. He was so respectful and scheduled times were met, and were invoiced the same as what we were quoted - no surprises. On top of his professionalism, the work he did was outstanding to say the least! Thank you Rayco for the outstanding service from start to finish and for making everything we wanted happen beautifully."

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers. 

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.

It is safe to run a generator continuously, but you must follow safety protocols to ensure personal and home safety. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for specific recommendations, but the general recommendation is to turn generators off overnight or when you’re away from the house. Overworked generators can pose a fire hazard and if your generator is not in a well-ventilated area, running it continuously could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

You can determine what size generator you need by listing the various appliances it will power during an outage. Write down the start-up watt usage, and then add them all together. 

A 7,500-watt generator will run your refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits without a problem. However, you’ll need an extra 3,000 to 4,500 watts to run your water heater and another 5,000 to 25,000 watts to run your electric furnace. In these instances, a whole-home generator is your best bet for running your critical equipment.

Generator size requirements vary wildly among properties, but typical generator sizes are listed below based on home square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20kW+

Unfortunately, home square footage isn’t always a good indicator of generator size requirements. Instead, you should call in a professional to discuss which items in your home you’d like to run via your generator. They can calculate peak and average consumption for those items and then size your generator appropriately for optimal performance.
