Stains penetrate wood best when it's cool and dry, so you want to avoid moisture. If the wood is wet upon application, or if it rains before the stain dries, the water will soak into the wood and displace the staining solution. You can paint a deck with either a roller or a brush, but rollers are more common because they’re faster. There are benefits to using a brush, though. The fastest way to paint a deck is with a sprayer, but they’re more expensive than rollers and brushes and more likely to result in an uneven coat.

Whitewashing isn’t permanent, but it can last for a long, long time. When you apply it correctly or have a seasoned pro whitewash your brick, whitewashing can last for 20 to 30 years or longer. Whitewash is very durable and typically requires little maintenance, making it a great project for most DIYers.

If you have a smooth, already bonded concrete surface, painting a concrete pool deck can be a great way to brighten up the area and add longevity. If the surface has another covering or a different type of paint has been used previously, you won’t be able to paint it without removing the existing coating. Wooden decks benefit from painting as it helps to keep them watertight. Quality pool deck paints also help make the surface less slippery and less likely to gather mold and mildew or prematurely crack.

Hold off on walking across your freshly stained deck for at least 24 to 48 hours and even longer before setting down furniture or planters. Drying time can stretch depending on humidity and temperature, so give it extra time when in doubt. Also, remember that even though your stained deck may feel dry to the touch, it can take 24 hours to one week to cure fully, based on the type of stain used.
