"Great. Their initial time frame was long (they were scheduling up to two months out), but I mentioned I was hoping for sooner. When, four weeks in, they had a sudden opening, due to a job in my neighborhood finishing early, they called to arrange and were there within an hour. Late notice meant I could not be home, but the arborist reassured me by speaking with me on the phone. The tree pruning was smart and sensitive. When I expressed some disappointment with underprunung on a big shrub, the arborist arranged to come back to fix it the following week. Super responsive, willing to explain recommendations."

"I hired Twins G Tree Service to remove several dead trees on my property and to trim a few trees on my rental property. The consultation/quote process went very well. Darwin was on time and gave good advice. The crew did a great job and cleaned up well afterwards. I would definitely hire them again."

"We requested a quote for a tree removal. He came the next day and gave us a very reasonable quote. We scheduled the service for the next day. He was on time and did an excellent job. I would highly recommend. We are also setting up lawn mowing service with him this summer."

"Mike and his brothers did a fantastic job trimming the trees at my home. I have wanted to get this job done for a long time and it looks so much better! They were timely, friendly and the price was fair. My neighbors liked them so much that they hired them too. I would absolutely recommend them for any tree work that you need done."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

A dead tree should always be cut down, because it could fall and cause injuries or damage, and it can also attract insects like carpenter ants. A tree that’s diseased beyond repair should also be cut down, but it’s not always easy for a homeowner to tell. Signs of disease include dying branches, a hollow trunk, leaning, and discolored or missing leaves, but your best bet is to hire a local arborist who can evaluate the tree and tell you if it can be saved or should be cut down.

Whether tree roots will continue to grow after a tree has been cut down depends on the species. Some tree roots will eventually die because they can no longer get nutrients through photosynthesis. However, other species that reproduce through root sprouts can continue to grow and produce new sprouts for seven years or more. For example, the roots of elms, ficus, and willows tend to regrow aggressively, while the roots of pines, oaks, and maples will typically die. To determine if a root system is still active, look for new sprouts on the old trunk, stump, or any exposed roots.

Service costs depend on several factors, including the system's age, type, and size, as well as the complexity of the repair. Labor costs and whether replacement parts are necessary also play a significant role.

Completely topping a plum tree is a risky business. Cut too much, and you’ll kill your tree. That said, you do need to trim the top of your tree to encourage bushy growth, maintain your tree’s vase shape, and limit size.

A plum tree's central leader (or trunk) should never extend more than 3 feet above the highest branch. When you first plant your tree, cut the central leader so it’s 2 to 3 feet tall. As it grows, cut it back 12 to 20 inches until it reaches its desired height. Never prune more than one-third of the new growth.

Getting a tree pro with the right experience can be the difference between your transplanted tree surviving or not. When hiring a local tree transplanting and removal service, follow up on references, check their portfolio, ask for a breakdown of the costs, and get proof of liability and workers’ compensation insurance.

Also, look for companies certified by the International Society of Arboriculture or registered with the Tree Care Industry Association and make sure they have an appropriate state or city license.
