"From the initial interaction through sweeping up - the insulation inc team were thorough in explaining their bid, the cellulose insulation product- and the process. They showed up on time - blew our garage attic and left the garage clean."

"These guys are the best. My 100-year old house never had much insulation in the attic and after a problem with ice dams in 2019 I decided to get the attic insulated. Houle was on the list of CenterPoint-approved contractors. They came when they said they would, did the work quickly, explained what they had done and cleaned up. They processed my rebate application for me too. My heating bills noticeably dropped last winter, and now that it is warm my house has stayed cooler longer. This summer, I had some water damage on a bedroom ceiling and wondered if the insulation work had somehow disconnected a pump for the AC unit in the attic. Houle sent techs out the same day to check. It turned out the pump had died on its own. The two techs took the time to do their own investigation of what the problem was, and did so cheerfully. Houle stands by their work and takes customer service seriously. I am impressed."

"Ivan came out to replace our garage trim due to squirrel damage and did a fantastic job. He was timely, responsive, and easy to communicate with where I had questions. Very easy to work with Ivan. Squirrel crisis averted and garage looks very good - high quality job by Ivan. I also had Ivan look at an ice damn issue we have been having on a section of our home. Ivan assessed the insulation, showed me the issue with lack of insulation (there was only 3 inches) and the building standards, gave me a fair price on insulating, and a week later he has insulated this section of our home. I am confident this will take care of our ice damn issue. I also could not believe this was not caught when we bought our home and again had insulation checked by a company last year after paying $3000 in ice dam removal. We are very thankful for Ivan?s expertise. Ivan stands behind his work and will help if we have additional concerns. I will 110% leverage Ivan in the future at our home."

"Very well, these guys are great, they seal everything right and load tons of insulation. My house is now at a R60. And this was not cheap, however I do not expect heating costs to go down for many years to come unless we all go solar."

"Professional insulation company? Yep, that's Snap Construction for sure. I used them for my insulation needs last year and their team did a great job. Prices were fair and the flexible options made it easy to schedule the work around my schedule which was important because I have a day job outside of my home. All in all, a solid experience."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Natural fiber batts and spray foam insulation both work great for soundproofing. Newer materials, such as hemp batts, are more expensive but more effective for insulation and sound blocking. They are also more sustainable. There is also a professional system called Blow-In Blanket Insulation (BIBS) that is soundproof and moisture-resistant. However, BIBS must be installed professionally and can be a costly investment.

The amount and type of insulation your home needs depends on your location, climate, and the specific installation area (attic, walls, or floors). Your local building code will typically determine the minimum required R-value. For specific recommendations, Energy Star suggests the following R-values: homes in the Southern U.S. should have R30 to R60 in attics and R13 to R25 in floors and walls; homes in moderate climates need R38 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls; and homes in northern states require R49 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls.

Canned spray foam has an R-value of R-3.7 per inch. However, it’s not great for use as insulation. Also known as single-component spray foam, it doesn’t expand as much as two-part types that work for insulating the whole house. Save the canned foam for gaps around doors and windows.

Three signs that you need crawl space insulation are drafts, high energy bills, and mold. Drafts can start in crawl spaces and cause hot or cold air to spread to the rest of your home through holes in the floors and walls. And even if your entire home is well-insulated, you can still feel an unchecked draft from your crawl space and in your utility bill. Uninsulated crawl spaces can let in air and moisture, and because they’re built directly on the ground and difficult to dry out, they are hotspots for mold and mildew.

The heat loss through a poorly insulated attic when you’re running your furnace or heat pump during cold weather can be as high as 25%. This means you could see significantly higher energy costs to make up for this heat loss. The cost of adding insulation to the attic may eventually pay for itself through lower energy bills. If you decide to add a radiant barrier too, the radiant barrier cost may also pay for itself over time.
