The next best budget-friendly option is to use landscaping timbers. These timbers are great for DIY projects, as they don’t require tools to successfully build a retaining wall. Landscape timber costs around $10 to $14 per square foot. Depending on your chosen garden style, you can also go with natural stones or concrete blocks. Natural stones can be expensive if you buy them, but they’re a lot less costly if you can source them from your property. 

Most retaining wall installations can be finished in one to three weeks, but the timeline varies based on factors like wall size and material. The local climate and major weather events, such as storms or flooding, can also extend the project's timeline, as can any holds ups in the permitting process.

Each design is different, so we can’t say definitively if you’ll need a dedicated drainage system in place for a two-foot retaining wall. However, you can likely skip the drainage, as this project is typically served for walls that are 4 feet tall or more. Even with a relatively low wall, consider drainage if you are building on top of clay or poor-draining soil types or if there are buried water sources nearby, like a well used for other outdoor garden projects.
