Yes, if you live in a climate with extended periods of frost or snow, it’s best to winterize the sink and avoid potential bursting. Similar to winterizing a garden hose, turn off your water from the source. Once turned off, open the faucet so the remaining water completely drains out. You can also pour a small amount of antifreeze down the sink drain so any trapped water won’t freeze.

It’s usually best to hire a certified master plumber to perform plumbing work in your home. Certified plumbers will be able to tackle most plumbing jobs and will have experience with drainage problems, water supply pipes, and appliances. This type of plumber is the most expensive, but the price is well worth it. You could opt for a journeyperson or an apprentice, which will be more affordable, but the reduced experience means your repair may not be as high-quality. Avoid hiring a handyperson for plumbing work unless you’re dealing with a simple issue, like a clog or a leaky faucet.

Most of the time, the answer is yes, but with an enormous asterisk. While an increase in iron deposits isn’t likely to harm you if consumed, that doesn’t mean you should drink any brown water from your faucets. In our book, it’s better to be safe than sorry and opt for bottled until the issue is resolved.

If you have to hold the toilet handle (also called the toilet lever) down to flush, you probably have a chain problem. A chain that cannot fully lift the flapper will close too early and not clear the toilet bowl. Try adjusting the chain length so there’s about ½ inch of slack.   

Don’t leave frozen pipes to thaw on their own. Frozen pipes can build up extreme pressure and eventually burst if left unattended. This massive amount of water can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your home. If you don’t see any leaks, slowly warm up your pipes with indirect heating elements or warm towels.
