"GST Tiling and Flooring did an excellent job with multiple flooring projects at my house. This is the highest quality installation you can find. Projects were completed on time and within budget. Contractor arrived every day and worked full days until each project was done. Made great design recommendations and can recommend other quality vendors for projects such as shower glass installation. We are very satisfied with the workmanship."

"This is the second time I hired Mario and Christian to finish off the house with mostly ceramic tile. The guys were on time and ready to go. It took a day and a half to complete the bedroom and I have to say it looks fantastic. My home is now complete with mostly tile which is easy cleanup for me. Great work and would rehire again."

"Mr. Backsplash did a wonderful job. Everything looks beautiful and just how I had imagined. They cleaned up after themselves and were pleasant to work with. I really appreciate that they took my job for less than their usual minimum amount. It’s hard to get Contractors out for small jobs, but they came out and did a great job! Highly recommend!"

"David did an amazing job! He cut ceramic tile backsplash in my kitchen to accommodate a microwave oven that is larger than the previous one. He even attached the microwave bracket locating the wall studs & bolted in place with 3 heavy screws. Microwave is very heavy as it's an air fryer & oven. He will be coming back to do some grouting, clean & seal master bath & spare bath tiles as well as caulking around sinks & bath tub. He's very nice, was easy to communicate with, went above & beyond what was expected of him, I highly recommend the Grout Medic of Rochester Hills for any grouting/tiling work that you want done!!!"

"I hired Dak and his team to install new tiles in my bathroom, and I couldn?t be happier with the results! They were professional, on time, and very detail-oriented. The tile work was done with incredible precision, and they made sure everything was clean before leaving. Like others have mentioned, Dak does not speak English, but his assistant Paolo was great at communicating and ensuring everything went smoothly. I will definitely be hiring them again for future projects!"

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Tile removal costs about $2 to $7 per square foot unless you do it yourself. When you hire a pro, tile installation costs $5 to $45 per square foot. Costs vary widely, but they depend on the tile material (custom-made stone tiles cost significantly more than plain ceramic tile), location, and tile size.

Generally speaking, it is better to cut tile wet when using a fast-moving wet saw to reduce dust and chipping. However, tile can be cut dry when using just about any cutting tool. Dry cutting will result in a bigger mess and may increase the risk of chipping or cracking, but if you’re just making small cuts, dry cutting is a safe and viable option. Cutting dry also means you can apply tile grout sooner, so it’s better for rushed projects.

Figure out how much tile you need by measuring the backsplash area. Measure the height and length in feet and multiply to get the square footage. Don’t make adjustments for outlets or small cutouts but subtract the square footage for windows or other large obstructions from the total. To account for waste, get 10% more than your calculation.

You can technically install tile over tile, but we don’t suggest it. Installing tile over any surface that isn’t a completely flat and prepared subfloor will result in a shoddy overall job, uneven flooring, tiles that don’t adhere, extra weight, gaps, cracks, and room for moisture and dirt to enter. For the best results, only install new tile on a flat, sanded surface like subflooring or concrete that is prepared for tile.

If you have asbestos tile and would rather tile over it than remove it, or if your existing tile is completely flat and bonded tightly to the floor, you may be able to tile over existing tile. But experts recommend thinking twice before you do.

Tile countertops can be an excellent and budget-friendly option for a kitchen, provided they are installed correctly. It's important to choose tiles, such as ceramic, that are heat-, water-, and scratch-resistant. When the grout is properly sealed, it will resist stains, making the surface easy to clean. Tile is also considered a sustainable material. For a cohesive kitchen design and added protection, you can pair a tile countertop with a matching tile backsplash.
